Türkiye-specific accommodation check

Normal accommodation process or a warning sign?

Reviewed 22 September 2026

Usually normal

A normal reservation

The property name, address, dates, room type, cancellation terms and total price are visible before payment. A confirmation number is issued.

Warning sign

A copied hotel page offers an unusually large discount but demands immediate payment to a personal bank account or through a messaging application.

Usually normal

A normal payment request

Payment follows the method and schedule shown in the original booking. Any change can be verified through the platform or the property's independently confirmed contact details.

Warning sign

After booking, an urgent message says the reservation will be cancelled unless card details are entered again through an unfamiliar link.

Usually normal

A normal check-in

Accommodation staff may request identification needed for guest registration and return it after completing the check-in process.

Warning sign

A passport is kept as a deposit, taken away without explanation or withheld because of a billing disagreement.

Usually normal

A normal room problem

A genuine room defect or availability issue is explained and a documented alternative, correction or refund process is offered.

Warning sign

The advertised room does not exist, the guest is moved to an unrelated property or extra cash is demanded to receive the room already booked.

Check before booking and during check-in

Five checks that protect your booking and identity

1

Does the website address exactly match the real property?

Fraudulent sites may copy a hotel's name, logo, photographs and layout while changing only a character, word or domain ending.

EN: I will verify this reservation through the hotel's independently listed contact details.

TR: Bu rezervasyonu otelin bağımsız olarak doğrulanmış iletişim bilgilerinden kontrol edeceğim.

2

Does the IBAN belong to the property or registered agency?

A professional-looking page or invoice does not prove ownership. Be especially cautious when payment is redirected to a personal account.

EN: Please provide the registered company name and official payment document.

TR: Lütfen kayıtlı şirket unvanını ve resmî ödeme belgesini gönderin.

3

Did the payment request arrive through a new link?

Messages can contain correct booking dates and prices yet still be phishing attempts. Open the original application yourself instead of using the message link.

EN: I will check the payment request inside my original booking account.

TR: Ödeme talebini kendi rezervasyon hesabımdan kontrol edeceğim.

4

Does the room match the confirmed room type?

Before unpacking, compare the room, bed type, occupancy, view and included services with the written confirmation.

EN: This room does not match my confirmation. Please document the proposed solution.

TR: Bu oda rezervasyon onayımla uyuşmuyor. Lütfen önerilen çözümü yazılı olarak bildirin.

5

Is your passport being retained as a deposit?

Identification may be examined for registration, but do not casually leave your passport as security for payment, equipment or room access.

EN: You may record the required details, but please return my passport now.

TR: Gerekli bilgileri kaydedebilirsiniz ancak lütfen pasaportumu şimdi geri verin.

Decision ladder

Verify, pause payment, document or leave?

VERIFY

The offer looks genuine but the price is unusually low

Do not pay yet. Find the property through an independent source and confirm the offer using a separately obtained phone number.

PAUSE PAYMENT

A message demands urgent re-payment

Do not open the link. Enter the original booking application or website manually and contact its support channel.

DOCUMENT

The room or property differs from the booking

Photograph the condition, preserve the listing and confirmation, and request the proposed solution in writing before accepting it.

LEAVE / CALL 112

Threat, confinement, passport seizure or immediate danger

Move to a safe public area when possible. Call 112 if you are threatened, prevented from leaving or believe a crime is in progress.

Documented case files

What has actually happened before

Police operations, complaint statistics, enforcement actions and judicial investigations are labelled separately. An allegation, detention or arrest is not the same as a final conviction.

Case 12019Cybercrime operation

Five-star hotel names reportedly used to create fraudulent booking sites

Antalya

  • •Antalya Police reported an investigation into fraudulent websites created using the names of five-star hotels.
  • •The sites were allegedly used to accept accommodation reservations and obtain payments.
  • •Police stated that victims were directed through the copied hotel identities.
  • •Four suspects were referred to judicial authorities.
  • •The official report stated that three suspects were arrested and one was released under judicial control.

Pattern

Known hotel identity copied → convincing reservation page → payment collected through fraudulent channel

Practical lesson

A familiar hotel name and authentic photographs do not prove that the domain or payment recipient belongs to the hotel.

Case 22020Official warning

Ministry warned that hotel names, logos and photographs were being copied

Türkiye-wide

  • •The Ministry of Trade issued an official warning about fraudulent accommodation reservation websites.
  • •The warning described copied names, logos, photographs and nearly identical internet addresses.
  • •Consumers were reportedly approached through email and text messages with attractive offers.
  • •The Ministry advised verifying tourism facilities and agencies before payment.
  • •It also stated that suspected fraudulent activity should be reported to judicial authorities.

Pattern

Copied brand identity → small domain-name change → attractive offer → payment request

Practical lesson

Type or independently locate the official address. Do not trust a domain merely because the page looks identical to the real hotel.

Case 32021Police operation

Luxury-hotel websites allegedly copied in a nine-million-lira scheme

Ankara-centered operation across three provinces

  • •TRT Haber reported an investigation into copied websites belonging to luxury hotels.
  • •The alleged operation also used shell tourism companies.
  • •Authorities stated that approximately one thousand people were affected during the summer holiday season.
  • •The reported financial loss was approximately nine million Turkish lira.
  • •A twelve-person group was identified during the investigation.

Pattern

Luxury hotel page copied → shell tourism company presented → discounted holiday sold → reservation later found invalid

Practical lesson

Verify both the accommodation and the agency. A registered-looking agency name, invoice or call centre can still be part of a copied-site scheme.

Case 42022Police operation

Investigation into 180 fraudulent reservations and 19 alleged shell companies

Muğla-centered operation across 15 provinces

  • •Authorities said 180 people seeking hotel reservations were affected.
  • •The alleged loss was 12 million 346 thousand Turkish lira.
  • •The investigation reportedly identified bank accounts and fixed telephone lines opened through 19 shell companies.
  • •Twenty-five suspects were taken into custody and referred to judicial authorities; allegations should not be treated as final convictions.

Pattern

Hotel site copied → fixed telephone support creates confidence → payment directed to shell-company account

Practical lesson

A working telephone number and company-style bank account are not enough. Confirm the reservation directly with the real property before transferring money.

  • •The report concerned alleged fraudulent accommodation advertisements; an arrest is not the same as a final conviction.

Pattern

Practical lesson

For villas, apartments and bungalows, verify the exact address, ownership or management relationship and payment recipient before sending a deposit.

They Paid 100,000 TL for a Hotel Stay — The Reservation Was Cancelled, but the Refund Never Came

ommodation business. But the customers said the money they had already paid was not refunded. A cancelled holiday had become a dispute over 100,000 TL. This was more than an online complaint This case is useful for Radar because it did not remain simply a review posted online. The customers submitted the dispute to the Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ATSO). During the disciplinary process, documentation relating to the case was examined. This reportedly included: Reservation records Payment documents WhatsApp conversations between the parties That evidence is important. The case was therefore not based only on someone saying: “A hotel owes me money.” There were records showing the reservation, the payments and communication between the customers and the accommodation business. What did the review find? According to the reported disciplinary findings, the accommodation business had received payment but was unable to provide the promised accommodation service. The customers' payments were also not returned. The business was asked to submit a defence during the process but reportedly did not provide one within the disciplinary review. The matter then went before the chamber's assembly. The disciplinary proposal was accepted unanimously, and the business received a formal reprimand. That does not make this a criminal court judgment. It is important to keep that distinction clear. But it does mean this was more than an unverified social-media accusation. Documents were examined and a professional body took disciplinary action. Why does this matter for travelers? Hotel disputes can become difficult when everything has been arranged through phone calls or informal conversations. This case shows why keeping a clear record matters. If you pay a hotel directly, keep: Your reservation confirmation The agreed dates and price Payment receipts Bank transfer or card records Cancellation messages Emails and WhatsApp conversations If the booking is cancelled, also ask for the refund terms and expected refund date in writing. A message saying: “Your refund will be processed within seven days” can become much more useful later than a telephone conversation you cannot document. Why does this matter for Radar? One dispute involving one accommodation business does not mean hotels in Antalya generally behave this way. Radar should never make that assumption. The useful question is whether independent travelers begin reporting the same type of problem. For example: A confirmed reservation is cancelled. The traveler has already paid. A refund is promised but does not arrive. Communication becomes difficult after cancellation. Multiple travelers independently describe the same sequence. One report shows one incident. Repeated independent reports may indicate a pattern worth investigating. If this happens to you Do not delete your booking confirmation after making a reservation. Keep the complete payment trail. If a cancellation happens, save screenshots of relevant messages and ask for the refund timeline in writing. If you later submit a Radar report, include supporting evidence whenever possible. Before uploading anything, hide sensitive information such as your full card number, bank account details, passport number, home address and other personal information. This example Radar report is based on a real accommodation dispute in Antalya in 2026. The information comes from public reporting about a disciplinary process in which reservation documents, payment records and communications between the parties were reviewed. The customers and accommodation business have intentionally not been identified in this Radar report. TurkTravelRadar was not a party to the dispute. Have you experienced something similar? Share what happened on Radar. Your report could help another traveler understand what to document if a reservation is cancelled and a refund does not arrive. Whenever possible, support your report with reservation records, payment evidence and written communication. One report shows one incident. When independent travelers begin reporting the same behavior, Radar can start detecting a pattern.

The Fake "Cave Room" Scam: How Shady Agencies Downgrade Your Cappadocia Hotel

I booked a 3-day package tour to Cappadocia through a local agency website that promised a 'luxury authentic cave hotel' experience in Göreme. They showed me beautiful photos of a room carved into the volcanic rock with a private jacuzzi. However, when the shuttle dropped me off at the hotel, I was given a standard concrete room in a newly built annex building next door. When I complained, the hotel receptionist told me that the agency had booked their cheapest 'standard promo' room, and all actual cave rooms were fully occupied. The agency refused to refund me, claiming that the annex was part of the same 'hotel property' listed in the contract.
