What happened?

It's around 4:00 AM. Your Istanbul trip is over. Your bags are packed, you've checked out, and there's only one mission left: Get to the airport without missing your flight. At that hour, most travelers aren't exactly in the mood for a financial negotiation. In February 2026, a tourist visiting Istanbul said they booked a taxi through a ride-hailing app for a journey from Fatih to Istanbul Airport. The journey began normally. Everything seemed fine. Until they reached the airport. According to the traveler, the driver then requested an additional: 1,000 TL for what was described as: “tunnel and highway tolls.” The traveler thought the amount sounded unusually high. They say they offered to pay: 500 TL toward the tolls instead. But according to their account, the driver insisted on the full 1,000 TL. So a tired traveler trying to catch an early-morning flight suddenly found themselves negotiating Istanbul's road toll system at 4 AM. The usual airport checklist is pretty simple: Passport? Check. Luggage? Check. Boarding pass? Check. Emergency audit of Istanbul's tunnel and highway fees? Usually not on the list. The traveler says they tried to ask police for help Because the tourist questioned the additional 1,000 TL charge, they say they attempted to seek help from police officers at the airport. According to their account, they did not receive the assistance they expected. Eventually, the traveler says they paid the requested amount. The final figure they reported was: 3,000 TL in total According to the traveler: 1,000 TL of that total was the additional amount requested for tunnel and highway tolls. So the reported figures were: Total paid: 3,000 TL Additional toll/highway charge requested: 1,000 TL The traveler later shared the experience publicly because they wanted to understand whether such a high additional toll charge was actually normal. People responding to the post pointed out that depending on the route, a taxi journey in Istanbul can legitimately involve tunnel, bridge or highway tolls. One commenter calculated that even if certain tolls were counted in both directions, they believed the amount would have been around 660 TL. However, there's an important distinction here: 660 TL is not an amount independently verified by TurkTravelRadar. It was a calculation made by another person responding to the traveler's post. So we're not recording: “The correct toll was definitely 660 TL.” What we can record from the traveler's own account is: The driver requested an additional 1,000 TL for tolls. The traveler says they paid 3,000 TL in total. What matters for Radar? Charging a passenger for legitimate bridge, tunnel or highway tolls is not automatically a problem. The important question is: What did the tolls actually cost, and how much was the traveler asked to pay? If independent travelers begin reporting unusually high additional toll charges on the same routes, Radar can compare those reports and look for a possible pattern. That's particularly useful for international visitors. If you've just arrived in Istanbul, you're unlikely to know exactly how much a tunnel, bridge or motorway should cost. When someone tells you: “That's the toll.” it's easy to assume the amount is official. And at four in the morning, the accountant inside most of us is still asleep. This is an example traveler report based on a real experience publicly shared by a visitor to Istanbul on February 22, 2026. The information represents the traveler's own account and has not been independently verified by TurkTravelRadar. The driver's or business's name is intentionally not displayed in this Radar report. Have you experienced something similar? Share what happened on Radar. Your report could help travelers using the same route after you better understand what they may be asked to pay. Whenever possible, include a taximeter photo, ride-app record, route screenshot, toll information, taxi receipt and payment record. If you were specifically charged extra for a bridge, tunnel or highway toll, a screenshot showing the route taken can be particularly useful when reviewing the report. Please hide sensitive personal and payment information before uploading evidence. One disputed additional charge is one traveler's experience. When independent travelers begin reporting similar charges on the same routes, Radar can start detecting a possible pattern.

What should I do?
