What happened?

What happened? Imagine arriving at Antalya Airport. You collect your luggage, leave the terminal and get into a taxi. Normally, what happens next is simple: you tell the driver where you are going, the taximeter starts, and you pay the fare shown when you arrive. But according to footage that circulated in July 2026, one foreign tourist's journey from Antalya Airport began differently. After getting into the taxi, the tourist noticed that the taximeter was not running and asked the driver to turn it on. The driver reportedly refused and instead demanded a fixed fare of: $30 Turkish media reported that this was around 1,400 TL at the time. The tourist did not simply accept the price. According to the footage, he repeatedly asked for the meter to be used, while the driver continued to insist on the fixed fare. At one point, the driver reportedly indicated that if the tourist did not accept the arrangement, he could take him back to the airport. An ordinary airport taxi ride had become a fare dispute before the journey had properly begun. The conversation attracted attention During the argument, the tourist objected to the meter not being used and said: “Haram.” According to the footage and Turkish media reports, the driver replied: “I'm not Muslim.” The exchange helped the video spread online. But for travelers, the important detail is not the argument itself. The passenger asked for the taximeter to be used, while the driver reportedly refused and demanded a fixed price in dollars instead. The case did not end with a viral video This was not simply an anonymous online complaint. After the footage became public, Antalya Chamber of Drivers and Automobile Tradesmen President Mehmet Ali Alkan said they contacted the management of the airport taxi cooperative. According to his statement, the driver was then barred from working at the airport taxi stand. The chamber also informed other taxi stands in Antalya that the driver should not be employed as a taxi driver. That gives this case more supporting information than a typical online claim. There was video footage, public reporting and subsequent action announced by the relevant professional organisation. The chamber president also said he did not know whether the tourist had filed a separate formal complaint. What can you check at Antalya Airport? Antalya Airport states that taxi ranks are located outside the arrivals areas of the terminals. Drivers operating there have special airport identification cards, and a fare board is displayed next to the taxi rank. That gives travelers something useful to check before leaving the airport. Once the journey begins, also check whether the taximeter is actually running. If you expected a metered journey but are suddenly asked to pay a fixed price, clarify how the fare will be calculated before continuing. Why does this matter for Radar? One driver's behavior does not tell us how taxi drivers in Antalya or Türkiye generally behave. Radar should not turn one incident into a claim about an entire city, airport or profession. The useful question is: Are independent travelers repeatedly reporting the same behavior? For example: The taximeter is not activated. A fixed price is demanded instead. The fare is quoted in dollars or euros. A passenger asks for the meter and is refused. The passenger is told the journey will not continue unless the fixed fare is accepted. One report shows one incident. But if unrelated travelers begin reporting the same sequence independently, Radar can start identifying a possible pattern. If something similar happens to you Whenever possible, keep: Taxi plate number Driver or taxi identification Photo of the taximeter Receipt or card terminal receipt Card transaction record Pickup and destination Location history Photos or video, when safely obtained These details can make a traveler report much more useful. This example report is based on a real incident reported at Antalya Airport in July 2026. The information is based on publicly circulated footage, media reporting and statements made by the Antalya Chamber of Drivers and Automobile Tradesmen after the video became public. TurkTravelRadar was not a party to the incident. Have you experienced something similar? Share what happened on Radar. Your report could help another traveler recognize a similar situation before it becomes a problem. Whenever possible, include supporting evidence. Before uploading anything, hide sensitive information such as your full card number, passport details or other personal information. One report shows one incident. When independent travelers begin reporting the same behavior, Radar can start detecting a pattern.
