The 'Service Charge' vs. 'Tipping' Confusion in Taksim Restaurants

📍 TaksimPublished 18/09/2026Chloe_Backpacks · Traveler

Reviewed report

What happened?

We had dinner at a nice rooftop restaurant near Taksim Square. The food was great, and when the bill came, the waiter explicitly told us, 'Tip is not included, sir.' So we left a generous 15% cash tip on the table. Later, when I translated the itemized bill using Google Lens, I noticed a 12% charge listed as 'Servis Ücreti' (Service Charge) was already added to the bill. The waiter double-dipped by making us feel guilty into tipping extra on top of an already included service fee

What should I do?

Request a priced menu and confirm the weight, extras, water, appetizers and service charge before ordering.

Warning signs to check

  • No printed or clearly priced menu
  • Food placed on the table without explanation
  • Weight or service charges revealed only on the bill
