What happened?

Imagine going out for dinner with friends in Istanbul. You're in Etiler. You sit down, order food and drinks, and enjoy the evening. Everything seems normal. Until the bill arrives. According to a foreign tourist who publicly described the experience in 2026, the total presented at the end of the night was: 96,200 TL The traveler started checking the bill. Because 96,200 TL is the kind of number that makes you wonder: “Did we have dinner… or accidentally buy the table too?” According to the traveler's account, approximately: 90,000 TL of the original bill came from just two bottles of sparkling wine. The tourist said they did not speak Turkish and had not fully understood the menu. But when they saw the 96,200 TL total, they objected. And that's where the story became particularly interesting. The bill changed after the tourist complained According to the traveler, the first total presented was: 96,200 TL After they objected, changes were reportedly made to the bill by hand. The new total became: 52,000 TL That means the bill dropped by: 44,200 TL after the complaint. In other words, approximately 46% of the original bill disappeared. And that naturally raises a question: If 44,200 TL can disappear after a few minutes of questioning the bill, where did that amount come from in the first place? This is an important distinction for Radar. An expensive restaurant is not automatically a problem. Luxury restaurants can sell very expensive bottles of wine or other premium products. If a price is clearly displayed and the customer knowingly orders the item, a high price alone does not mean anything improper happened. What makes this report noteworthy isn't simply: “The restaurant was expensive.” It's the difference between: The first bill: 96,200 TL and: The bill after the tourist objected: 52,000 TL That's a difference of: 44,200 TL According to the traveler's account, roughly 90,000 TL of the first bill was associated with two bottles. The dramatic reduction after the complaint is what made the tourist question the original amount. Dinner had suddenly turned into a calculator competition. So how much did the tourist actually pay? This is where we need to be careful. Public reporting clearly states that the first bill presented was: 96,200 TL and that after the tourist objected, the amount was reduced to: 52,000 TL However, the available source does not clearly establish the final amount the tourist actually paid. So we should not write: “The tourist paid 52,000 TL.” What we can confidently record is: First bill presented: 96,200 TL Bill after objection: 52,000 TL Difference: 44,200 TL Confirmed final amount paid: Not specified That's how Radar should work. We report what the available evidence tells us. We don't fill in the gaps with assumptions. This is an example traveler report based on a real incident publicly described by a foreign visitor in Istanbul in June 2026. The incident was subsequently reported by the media. TurkTravelRadar was not involved in the incident, and we do not add details that cannot be supported by publicly available information. The business name is intentionally not displayed in this Radar report. Have you experienced something similar? Share what happened on Radar. Your report could help travelers visiting the same area after you better understand what to look out for. Whenever possible, include a photo of the menu, the original bill, any revised bill, receipt or invoice, and payment record. If a bill is changed after you question it, having photos of both the original and revised versions can be particularly useful when assessing what happened. Please hide sensitive personal information and card details before uploading any evidence. One incident is one traveler's experience. When independent travelers begin reporting the same behavior, Radar can start detecting a possible pattern.
