What happened?

You are on vacation in Antalya. You buy a few things, come to the register, and the total is:890 TL.You hand over your card. The device beeps.Payment completed. At this point, one usually puts the receipt in their pocket and moves on with life. After all, you don't plan to act as a bank inspector while on vacation. However, a tourist sharing their Antalya experience in May 2025 states that they noticed a small but annoying discrepancy when looking at their card transactions.According to the tourist's calculation, 890 TL should have been equivalent to around 22 US dollars.Yet, they specify that the amount reflected on their card was approximately:25 dollars. There was a difference of about:3 dollars.Looking at it on its own, it is not an amount that would ruin a vacation budget. But if the same situation repeats throughout the vacation at restaurants, shops, taxis, and souvenir shopping, what you call a "small difference" might just head back home with you in your suitcase. The tourist explains that when they later researched what happened, they thought the payment might have been processed in their card's own currency instead of Turkish lira.In their post, they mention a conversion fee of about 3% and an unfavorable exchange rate from their perspective. There is an important detail here:With the information at hand, we cannot verify whether the entire 890 TL → approximately 25 dollars outcome described by the tourist can be explained solely by a 3% fee. The exchange rate of the card-issuing bank or other fees may have also affected the result. In other words, the definitive information we have is not a bank audit; it is the tourist's own payment experience. The advice the tourist gave to other travelers after this incident is quite simple:When paying by card, if the device asks you "Turkish Lira or your own currency?", check what the selection means.Because sometimes on vacation, the three most expensive words can be:“Just press OK.”Why is this incident important for Radar?A single card transaction of one tourist proves nothing about all businesses in Antalya. However, if reports continuously come from different tourists in the same region stating:“I saw a TL price → a higher amount was withdrawn from the card in my own currency,”Radar can correlate them with one another. Thus, the issue ceases to be just one person's 3 dollars and can be examined in terms of whether it is a recurring payment behavior in certain areas. This is a sample tourist report prepared from a past tourist experience. The incident is claimed to have occurred in Antalya in May 2025. The narrative is based on the traveler's own statement and has not been independently verified by TurkTravelRadar. If you have experienced a similar incident, you can share it on Radar. The experience you share can help tourists who will make payments in the same region after you.If possible, attach a receipt, invoice, card slip, photo of the payment device screen, screenshot of the bank transaction, or a photo of the price you saw at the business to your report. Providing such evidence without sharing your personal and card information will help evaluate the accuracy of the report.A single report is an allegation on its own. When independent reports begin to repeat at the same spot, Radar steps in.If you would like to translate any other sample reports regarding dynamic currency conversion (DCC), transportation costs, or accommodation issues, please let me know.
