The Switcheroo: How my 500 TL note became a 50 TL note in a Sultanahmet Taxi

What happened?

I took a taxi from Taksim to Sultanahmet. The meter showed around 320 TL. I handed the driver a 500 TL note. He took it, dropped it on the floor for a split second, and then showed me a 50 TL note, saying, 'Sir, you gave me 50, not 500.' I was confused and doubted myself, so I gave him another 200 TL. Later, I realized both notes look very similar in the dark (both are greenish/greyish). He completely gaslighted me. (The Takeaway): Always count and state the money out loud when handing it to a taxi driver (e.g., "Here is 500 Lira"). Better yet, use taxi apps like BiTaksi or Uber where the payment is digital, or use the Istanbulkart on public transport to avoid cash issues.

What should I do?

Confirm the driver, destination and total fare before entering the vehicle. Contact the original provider before making a second payment.
