A massive journey into Ottoman history, but don't skip the Harem and remember it's closed on Tuesdays!
If you want to understand the scale and power of the Ottoman Empire, Topkapi Palace is the place to go. Unlike European palaces that are usually just one massive building, Topkapi is a sprawling complex divided into four beautiful courtyards with gardens, pavilions, and holy relics. The views of the Bosphorus from the fourth courtyard are absolutely incredible and worth the walk alone! As of my visit, ticket pricing for foreign tourists has changed to a fixed Combined Ticket which costs 2,750 TL. The good news is that this ticket automatically includes the main palace grounds, the Hagia Irene church, AND the famous Harem section. Definitely do not skip the Harem; the intricate tile work and the history of how the Sultan's family lived was the absolute highlight of my entire day. Crucial tips for anyone planning to visit:The Tuesday Trap: Make sure you plan your itinerary correctly because Topkapi Palace is completely closed on Tuesdays. I saw several confused tourists outside the gates who didn't check the calendar!Audio Guide & ID: A free audio guide is included with your ticket, which is great because there aren't many English signs inside. However, they require an official ID or Passport as a deposit to give you the device. Make sure you carry your physical passport with you; they won't accept a photo of it on your phone!Wear Comfortable Shoes: You will be doing a massive amount of walking on uneven cobblestones. It took me nearly 3.5 hours to see everything without rushing.

Worth it?
Yes. It is one of Istanbul’s most important historic attractions, but it requires several hours to appreciate properly.
Safety status
Normal visitor precautions. Keep valuables secure in queues and crowded indoor areas.
Visit duration
3-5 hours
Best time
Arrive at opening time and visit the Harem early
Best season
Spring and autumn are most comfortable; the palace can be visited year-round
Best for
Getting there
The main visitor entrance is in Sultanahmet, close to Hagia Sophia and Gulhane Park.
Public transport: Use tram line T1 to Sultanahmet or Gulhane, then continue uphill on foot.
Parking: Parking is difficult and traffic restrictions are common in the Historic Peninsula. Public transport is recommended.
Accessibility
Large parts involve cobbled ground, slopes and long walking distances; some historic sections may have steps. Contact the palace before visiting for current accessible routes.
Crowd guide
Queues and indoor rooms are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon. Start with the Harem or most important indoor sections.
Entry rules
Comfortable footwear is essential. Follow posted rules in sacred and collection areas; photography restrictions may apply in some rooms.
Know before you go
Tourist trap risk: Medium. Use the official ticket channel and be cautious with unofficial guides or sellers approaching visitors near Sultanahmet.
Reality check: The complex is much larger than it appears in photographs. A rushed one-hour visit will miss major sections, and queues can reduce the time available indoors.
Avoid when: Avoid arriving shortly before the ticket office closes. Tuesday visits are not possible, and midday is usually the busiest period.
Local alternative: Yildiz Palace offers another Ottoman palace experience and may be calmer, although its period and layout are different.
Tickets and verification
Closed on Tuesdays. The ticket office operates 09:00-17:00. The combined ticket includes Topkapi Palace, Hagia Irene and the Harem. Prices checked on 12 September 2026: foreign visitor 2,750 TRY and domestic visitor 500 TRY. Recheck before visiting.
Museum Pass: Museum Pass has exclusions: it is not valid for the Harem and Hagia Irene sections. Confirm current conditions officially.
