Pazar Maiden’s Castle: Rize’s Lone Watchtower in the Black Sea

WhatsApp

Located on a small rocky islet right off the coast of Pazar district in Rize, the historic Pazar Girl's Castle stands out as a medieval watchtower and lighthouse structure with fine stonework and no direct land connection

Walking along the coast, your eyes settle on a stone structure surrounded by water. It stands on a rocky outcrop just offshore. A wave arrives, breaks white against the rocks and retreats. The castle stays still while the sea around it keeps changing.

Kız Kalesi, or Maiden’s Castle, in Rize’s Pazar district, is small, but its setting makes it memorable. Its silhouette can turn a brief waterfront stop into a longer pause. After watching for a while, you may begin to wonder who once kept watch here.

A Castle Separated from the Shore

The rock beneath Kız Kalesi has no land connection today. The structure lies off the coast of Soğuksu neighbourhood, west of Pazar town centre.

From the shore, you can make out the rock supporting its walls. Calm water reveals more of the setting; stronger waves repeatedly obscure its edges. The movement of the Black Sea is as much a part of the scene as the architecture.

Give yourself time to look. At first, the small building seems easy to take in at a glance. As the light changes, details in the walls, openings and rock become more distinct.

A Coastal Lookout

Kız Kalesi served as a watchtower overlooking the sea and coast. The surviving structure offers a glimpse of that earlier role.

Look across the water with this in mind. What visitors now admire as scenery was once an area to observe carefully. Spotting approaching boats and watching coastal activity gave this position a practical purpose.

The castle continued to be used during the Ottoman period. The identities and everyday routines of those stationed here, however, remain uncertain.

Details in the Stonework

The square-plan structure was built using neatly cut stone. Its western entrance and round-arched defensive openings are notable architectural features.

You may not be able to distinguish every detail from the waterfront. Even so, the outline of the walls, arrangement of openings and position on the rock reveal how the compact building was organised.

Photographs often emphasise its isolated silhouette. Look a little longer, and that silhouette becomes a structure assembled stone by stone.

How Old Is Pazar Maiden’s Castle?

Its exact construction year is unknown; it is generally dated to the 13th or 14th century. A precise age would therefore be misleading.

The name should not automatically be linked to a particular princess legend. Places called Kız Kalesi elsewhere in Türkiye have their own stories, which cannot simply be transferred here.

Pazar’s castle has plenty to hold your attention in its coastal position, former lookout role and surviving masonry.

Pause Beside the Sea at Sunset

When conditions allow, spend some time on the waterfront towards the end of the day. Lower light changes the tones of the stone and surrounding water, while the shifting sky can make the castle’s outline more pronounced.

Cloudy weather brings its own atmosphere. A darker sea gives the building a different appearance. Choose conditions that allow you to enjoy the coast comfortably and safely.

Where Is Pazar Maiden’s Castle, and How Can You See It?

The castle stands offshore beside Soğuksu neighbourhood, west of Pazar town centre in Rize. It makes a worthwhile historic stop on a walk along Pazar’s coast.

Plan to view it from the shore. There is no land connection, so do not expect a walk across to the building. Avoid swimming towards the rock or descending into wave-exposed areas to reach it.

For a broader exploration of the district, consider a separate visit to Ciha Castle in Yücehisar village. The coastal Kız Kalesi and hilltop Ciha reveal two different settings for Pazar’s historic fortifications.

Before leaving the waterfront, take one last look. Another wave will break against the rock and draw away, leaving the stone tower in place. That small offshore watchtower may become one of the images you remember most clearly from Pazar.
