Kanlıca: A Spoonful of Yogurt Beside the Bosphorus
Taste Kanlıca yogurt beside the Bosphorus, discover a mosque by Mimar Sinan and explore the neighbourhood’s lanes, with an optional climb to Mihrabat Grove.
September 30, 2026

Arrive at Kanlıca Pier and step into the small square behind it.
A ferry worker calls across the landing. Chairs scrape beneath café tables; a spoon taps against a yogurt container. The breeze carries salt from the Bosphorus, while traffic hums along the road behind the waterfront.
You do not need to go far for your first stop. İsmailağa Kahvesi stands beside the pier, and the neighbourhood’s most familiar taste is waiting there: Kanlıca yogurt with powdered sugar.

But leave time for more than a table by the water. A mosque associated with Mimar Sinan sits just inland, residential lanes climb away from the square, and Mihrabat Grove offers a higher view of the strait.
Walking note — Physical effort: 1/5 around the pier; 3/5 with Mihrabat Grove
Begin at Kanlıca Pier, explore the square and Gazi İskender Paşa Mosque, then take a short wander through the nearby streets. Mihrabat Grove is an optional uphill excursion. Use a taxi to its entrance if the climb would be uncomfortable. The central route is compact, but kerbs, traffic crossings and narrow pavements still need attention. Return to the pier for a ferry, or use the 15 bus toward Üsküdar from the coastal road.
Start with the Water
Before sitting down, spend a few minutes near the pier.
Look across the Bosphorus. The opposite shore is close enough to distinguish buildings, but the water between them is busy with its own journeys. A ferry approaches; a larger vessel moves through the channel; small waves reach the landing after a boat has passed.
For a photograph, stand in the public area beside the pier and leave room for the waterfront buildings as well as the water. A departing ferry gives the scene movement. Another frame, looking back toward the square, shows the scale of Kanlıca: the café tables, the landing and the streets gathering behind them.
This is a place to explore on foot, with your first few stops only a short distance apart.
The Yogurt Worth Sitting Down For
Find a seat at İsmailağa Kahvesi, beside the pier, and order Kanlıca yogurt with powdered sugar.
The business traces its story to 1870, when İsmail Hakkı Bey acquired a small waterfront coffeehouse here. Its connection with yogurt has become part of the experience of arriving in Kanlıca.
Taste a little yogurt before mixing in all the sugar. It is cool and thick, with a tang that remains beneath the sweetness. The powdered sugar softens where it touches the surface; draw your spoon through it and try another mouthful.
The contrast is the pleasure: a familiar food, eaten in an unexpectedly sweet way, with the Bosphorus moving beside your table.
For a photograph, place the yogurt where natural light catches its surface. Include a little of the water beyond it, rather than filling the whole frame with the container. The setting explains why you came here to eat it.
You may see other toppings on the menu, but powdered sugar is the classic first choice.
A Sinan Mosque Behind the Square
From the waterfront, walk inland toward Gazi İskender Paşa Mosque.
Associated with Mimar Sinan, the mosque brings an older layer of Kanlıca into a route that could otherwise become only a café stop. Pause outside and look at its proportions before approaching the entrance. Here, a historic place of worship belongs to the same neighbourhood as the shops, homes and ferry landing.
Listen to how the surroundings change. Near the pier, conversations spread across tables. Beside the mosque, they become smaller: someone greeting a neighbour, footsteps approaching the door, a voice from a nearby business.
If the mosque is open to visitors outside prayer, enter quietly, remove your shoes and dress respectfully. Admission for an ordinary visit is free. Worship takes priority, so the exterior remains your stop when prayer is underway.
For an exterior photograph, include the building’s relationship with the street. The mosque is part of daily Kanlıca, and the frame is stronger when it shows that connection.
Follow a Few Streets Inland
Continue a little way beyond the square.
Kanlıca rises from the shore. The lanes draw you between homes and smaller businesses, and a short incline can bring a glimpse of water between the buildings. Older details sit beside more recent repairs: a timber surface, a garden wall, a doorway painted a different colour from the façade around it.
There may be coffee being prepared behind a counter or bread arriving at a shop. Children’s voices carry from further along a lane; a cat disappears beneath a parked car. These details are worth giving room to in your afternoon.
Photograph from the public street and let a doorway, wall or bend in the lane lead the eye. If the Bosphorus appears at the end of the view, keep it there as a small opening. You have already photographed the broad water at the pier; here, the pleasure is discovering how the neighbourhood meets it.
Turn back before the climb takes more energy than you intended. The central walk works well on its own.
An Optional Climb to Mihrabat
For a wider view, travel uphill to Mihrabat Grove, or Mihrabat Korusu.
Its entrance is on Mihrabat Caddesi, above Kanlıca. A taxi makes this an easier addition to the day, especially for families or anyone who would rather save their walking for the grove itself.
Follow the visitor paths into the trees. The smell changes from the waterfront’s salt to soil and vegetation. Shade cools your arms; a breeze moves through the branches before reaching an opening over the Bosphorus.
The operator welcomes people who come simply to walk and enjoy the view, as well as restaurant guests. You can make this a scenery stop after your yogurt rather than another meal.
Find an open viewpoint and give yourself a moment to understand the curve of the shore below. From the pier, you watched boats passing at eye level. Up here, their routes become lines through a much larger landscape.
For a photograph, include branches at one edge and leave the water enough space to carry the composition. A second image with a companion seen from behind can show the scale of the view.
Back to the Square
Return downhill to Kanlıca Pier, using a taxi again if your legs need the help.
The square will have changed while you were away. Another ferry has brought passengers; café tables have emptied and filled; the light has moved across the water.
Take a final photograph if a boat is approaching the landing. Then find a place to pause while you wait for your own departure.
Kanlıca gives you a taste you can remember precisely: cool yogurt, soft sugar and the slight tang left on your tongue. Around it are a mosque, rising lanes and a grove overlooking the strait — enough for an afternoon that reaches beyond the first waterfront table.
📌 Practical Info for Travelers
- Main route: Kanlıca Pier → İsmailağa Kahvesi → Gazi İskender Paşa Mosque → nearby residential streets → return to the pier.
- Local taste: İsmailağa Kahvesi, beside Kanlıca Pier, traces its history to 1870. Order Kanlıca yogurt with powdered sugar.
- Mosque visit: Ordinary visitor admission is free. Visit outside prayer when the mosque is open; remove shoes and wear clothing covering shoulders and knees. Women should cover their hair inside.
- Optional viewpoint: Mihrabat Grove, Mihrabat Caddesi No. 50, is uphill from the waterfront. Its operator welcomes visitors coming for a walk and the view. Restaurant purchases are separate; no fixed entry price or opening hours are quoted here because the operator’s published visitor page does not specify them.
- Grove rules: Picnics and barbecues are not permitted. Use the visitor paths and open viewing areas.
- Accessibility: The pier and square make the shortest outing. Narrow pavements and uneven kerbs can interrupt otherwise easy stretches. Mihrabat adds a substantial climb; taxi access to its entrance reduces the effort, but does not establish step-free access throughout the grounds.
- Transport exit: Şehir Hatları services call at Kanlıca Pier, including the Anadolu Kavağı–Üsküdar route. The 15 bus serves Kanlıca on its route toward Üsküdar.

Next walk: Continue south to Anadolu Hisarı and Göksu, where fortress walls rise beside a stream that meets the Bosphorus.
