7 Golden Rules to Avoid Taxi Scams in Istanbul

WhatsApp

From fake "tunnel fees" to the classic banknote swap trick, taxi scams are a real headache for Istanbul visitors. Here are 7 golden rules to protect your wallet and enjoy the city stress-free.

ıstanbul is a massive metropolis that welcomes millions of tourists every year with its historical and cultural riches. However, while exploring this fascinating city, there's one issue that has become the nightmare of many travelers: taxi piracy and taxi fraud.

We frequently hear stories of tourists who, while trying to get from Sultanahmet to Taksim, were charged 5-10 times the normal fare with baseless excuses like "tunnel fee" or "bridge crossing" — or who had the 100 TL in their wallet snatched away through the sleight-of-hand trick of "You gave me 10 TL, not 100."

To prevent your Istanbul trip from turning into unpleasant memories, we've compiled 7 golden rules and current taxi dynamics you need to know.

1. Use Official Mobile Apps

Instead of hailing a taxi on the street, use official and approved mobile apps like BiTaksi or iTaksi. These apps let you see your route, the estimated fare, and driver information in advance. The ordeal suffered by a tourist who was once driven around the city three times by a street-hailed taxi is completely prevented thanks to the GPS-based route tracking of these apps.

2. Make Sure the Meter Is Running

When you get into a taxi in Istanbul, the first thing you should do is check that the meter on the rearview mirror or front console has started with the opening fare. Stay away from drivers who say "The meter is broken" or "Let me just give you a fixed price." Fixed-price offers are always far above the real fare.

3. Know the Current Tariffs and Extra Fees

The strongest way to avoid being scammed is to know the prices. Taxi fares in Istanbul are updated periodically. Connecting roads, the Eurasia Tunnel, or bridge crossings (the July 15 Martyrs and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridges) are added to the fare. However, absolutely refuse made-up charges like a "taxi boarding tax" or a "night tariff" (there is no day/night distinction in Istanbul).

4. Say the Amount Out Loud When Paying with Large Banknotes

One of the most common tourist scams is the "money swap" trick. The tourist hands the driver 200 TL; with a sleight of hand, the driver switches it for a 20 TL note and says, "You gave me the wrong one, this is 20 TL." To prevent this, when paying, hand over the money out loud, saying "Here you go, this is 200 TL," and make sure the driver sees the money.

5. Track the Route Yourself with Google Maps

Tourists who are unfamiliar with the city, in particular, can fall victim to routes that are stretched for kilometers on short trips "using traffic as an excuse." Open Google Maps or Yandex Navigation on your phone and discreetly check whether the driver is following the correct route. The driver should know that they will be caught if they deviate from the route.

6. Learn the Difference Between Yellow, Turquoise, and Black Taxis

There are three different taxi segments in Istanbul, and each has a different tariff:

Yellow Taxi: Standard and the most affordable taxis.

Turquoise Taxi: The comfort segment (generally electric or spacious vehicles), 15% more expensive than yellow taxis.

Black Taxi: The luxury segment (VIP minibuses), operating at approximately 2 times the yellow taxi tariff.

Pay attention to the color of the vehicle so you don't end up as one of those tourists who unknowingly gets into a black taxi and gets shocked when the bill arrives.

7. Photograph the License Plate and Driver's License

When getting into the vehicle, be sure to photograph the license plate written on the door with your phone, or commit it to memory. If you forget any of your belongings or encounter a negative situation (rude behavior, excessive fare demand), you can file a complaint with this plate number via the Alo 153 Beyaz Masa hotline. Thanks to tourists who have used the complaint mechanism in the past, many fraudulent drivers have received heavy penalties.
