The Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) Scam in Antalya Souvenirs

Reviewed report

What happened?

I was buying some Turkish delights and souvenirs in the Antalya Old Town (Kaleiçi). The price was 600 TL. I paid with my international Visa card. The shopkeeper asked, 'Do you want to pay in Lira or USD?' and I thoughtlessly said 'USD' thinking it would be easier. When I checked my banking app, I realized the machine used an atrocious exchange rate, turning my $17 purchase into $24 due to 'Dynamic Currency Conversion' fees. The shop makes an extra profit from this.

What should I do?

Check the currency and final amount on the terminal. Decline unwanted currency conversion and keep the receipt.

Warning signs to check

  • The terminal shows a different currency
  • The final amount is hidden or rushed
  • A second payment is requested after approval
