Radar Report: Being a Tourist in Sultanahmet and the Endless Shop Invitations

📍 SultanahmetPublished 14/10/2026Burak Çınar · Explorer

What happened?

Walking through Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district, you may notice something within just a few steps: someone calls out to you. Sometimes it’s from a restaurant entrance, sometimes from a carpet shop. One person asks where you’re from; another invites you inside for a cup of tea. The conversation starts out friendly. But where does it lead? Some tourists visiting Istanbul have shared their discomfort with shopkeepers and restaurant staff approaching them and inviting them inside around Sultanahmet. In online travel discussions, some visitors say that what begins as a casual conversation or a quick look at the merchandise can turn into pressure to buy something. There is an important distinction here: inviting customers into a shop is not, by itself, evidence of bad intentions. Approaching potential customers is a common way of attracting business in tourist areas. The problem arises when someone continues insisting after a visitor has clearly declined, or when the prices and conditions turn out to be different from what was initially explained. In a district like Sultanahmet, which welcomes visitors from around the world, tourists should be able to end a conversation without feeling pressured to make a purchase. This is particularly important when buying products with unclear prices, ordering at restaurants, or shopping for souvenirs. How Can Tourists Protect Themselves? You are not obliged to buy anything simply because someone invites you into a shop. If you are not interested, you can politely decline and continue walking. If you do want to buy something, clarify the price, taxes and any additional charges before paying. Check the menu and prices before ordering at a restaurant. And remember: accepting a complimentary cup of tea does not mean you owe anyone a purchase. Has This Happened to You? Have you had a similar experience in Sultanahmet or another tourist area in Istanbul? Were you invited into a shop, repeatedly pressured to buy something, or surprised by a charge that had not been explained? Share your experience with the TurkTravelRadar community. If possible, include supporting evidence such as receipts, photographs or messages. Remember to hide your personal information before sharing. Real visitor experiences can help other travellers make more informed decisions.
