The "Cash Cleaning" Extortion: How Shady Short-Term Apartment Hosts Scam Tourists at Check-in

What happened?

I booked a cozy apartment in Kadıköy for 5 nights through a popular global accommodation app. The total price online was $350, which I paid in full digitally. However, when I arrived at the building with my luggage, the host met me at the door and refused to hand over the keys. She told me: 'Hanımefendi, the digital platform forgot to include the mandatory building sanitization fee in your receipt. You must pay an extra $100 cash right now for the cleaning service, or I will cancel your reservation.' I was exhausted after a long flight and terrified of being left on the street at night, so I gave her the cash. Later, when I contacted the app's official customer support, they told me that offline cash demands are strictly illegal and violate their terms, but the host denied everything since there was no paper trail

What should I do?

Keep your booking confirmation and contact the original booking platform before accepting a different room or making another payment.
