Getting Around Turkey
A practical introduction to city transport, ferries, taxis, buses and domestic travel.
Public transport in Istanbul
Istanbul's transport network includes metro, tram, funicular, ferry, bus and Metrobus services. Rail and ferry routes are often the most predictable options during busy road traffic.
An Istanbulkart can be used across much of the public transport network. Check official route maps, service notices and current fares before traveling.
Quick checklist
- Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours.
- Use ferries for useful connections and Bosphorus views.
- Check the final service time before a late journey.
Taxis
Use licensed taxis and follow the journey on a map when possible. Confirm that the meter is operating and avoid agreeing to an unclear price.
Traffic can make road journeys much longer than expected. Keep the address of your destination written clearly.
Travel between cities
Domestic flights connect major regions, while intercity buses serve most provinces. High-speed and conventional trains operate on selected routes.
Compare the complete journey, including airport or bus terminal transfers, rather than looking only at travel time.
Driving
A rental car can be useful for rural areas and multi-stop routes. Read the fuel, toll, deposit and insurance conditions before accepting the vehicle.
Parking and traffic can be difficult in historic city centers. Public transport may be easier for central Istanbul.
