Before You Go to Turkey
Visas, passports, money, mobile internet and essential preparation for your trip.
Check your entry requirements
Visa and passport rules depend on your nationality, passport type and planned length of stay. Check the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the official e-Visa system before booking.
Avoid unofficial visa websites. If you are eligible for an e-Visa, apply through the official government website and keep a digital and printed copy.
Quick checklist
- Check passport validity well before departure.
- Confirm whether you need a visa, e-Visa or qualify for visa-free entry.
- Keep travel insurance and accommodation details accessible.
Money and payments
The local currency is the Turkish lira. Cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, but cash remains useful for small shops, markets and some transport situations.
Check the amount and currency shown on a card terminal before approving payment. Prefer bank ATMs and decline unclear conversion offers until you understand the exchange rate.
Mobile internet
International roaming can be expensive. Compare your operator's roaming package with local SIM and eSIM options before traveling.
Airport offers are convenient but may cost more. Keep your passport available because identity registration may be required when purchasing a local SIM.
Pack for the destination
Turkey has varied climates. Coastal summers can be very hot, while central and eastern regions may be cold, especially outside summer.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and clothing suitable for visiting religious sites.
Check official information
