About this place

Perched on a high plateau in Sorgun, the Kerkenes Ruins (Kerkenes Harabeleri) are the remains of a massive, short-lived Iron Age capital widely identified as the ancient city of Pteria. Established in the late 6th century BC and surrounded by a monumental 7-kilometer stone wall, this legendary mountaintop city was burned down after only a few decades of glory. Featuring ancient water basins, stone palaces, and glacis fortifications, Kerkenes invites travelers to step off the beaten track into Central Anatolia's ultimate archaeological mystery
