Submit a Radar report →The Great Mosque and Hospital of Divriği is one of the most extraordinary masterpieces of Islamic architecture, located in the Divriği district of Sivas. Built between 1228 and 1243 by the Mengujekid ruler Ahmet Shah and his wife Melike Turan Melek, this magnificent complex became Türkiye's first architectural site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. • Unique Stone Carving Art: The most captivating feature of the complex is the tens of thousands of relief motifs on its monumental portals and pillars, where no single pattern is ever repeated. This "asymmetrical harmony," unparalleled in architectural history, symbolizes the uniqueness of every creation in the universe. • The Silhouette Miracle: On the western portal of the mosque, a unique phenomenon occurs between May and September. As the afternoon sun strikes the intricate stone carvings, a massive shadow forms a clear silhouette of a praying human figure. This stands as a brilliant testament to the architectural and astronomical genius of the medieval era. • The Healing Center (Darüşşifa): The hospital attached to the mosque was a highly advanced medical institution for its time. It features a unique acoustic design with a central stone fountain, where mental and emotional illnesses were treated through the soothing sound of flowing water and spiritual music (ney melodies).
