Sinop Fortress forms part of the historic coastal defences of Sinop, a port city on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. Its surviving stone walls and towers stand among the streets and waterfront of the modern city, offering a striking connection to its maritime past. The fortifications have ancient origins, with significant remains from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Repairs and additions continued under Byzantine, Seljuk, Candaroğlu and Ottoman rule. The complex includes both outer walls and an inner fortress, reflecting centuries of changing defensive needs. For visitors, the surviving waterfront sections provide an opportunity to appreciate the fortress’s scale while exploring central Sinop. The inner fortress also contains the Sinop Historical Prison Museum, a separate attraction associated with Turkey’s prison history and literary heritage.
