Its monumental stone structures were built by hunter-gatherer communities between approximately 9600 and 8200 BC, making it one of the earliest known examples of monumental architecture. The most striking features are its enormous T-shaped limestone pillars, decorated with carvings of wild animals. Some also have arms, hands and belts, suggesting that they represent human figures. Look closely at these details: they offer a rare glimpse into how people expressed their beliefs thousands of years before writing. The buildings are thought to have hosted communal gatherings and rituals, although their exact purpose remains under investigation. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, Göbeklitepe is a remarkable place to explore humanity’s early history—and the questions we are still trying to answer.
