Rooms surround an open courtyard, while the church preserves colourful wall paintings that make this complex especially worth exploring. Inside, look for scenes of the Annunciation, the Nativity and figures of Christian saints. The church is thought to date to the eleventh or twelfth century, based on the style of its paintings. One of its best-known images depicts Mary holding the infant Jesus, popularly called the “Smiling Virgin Mary.” Take your time with the details: painted faces, carved columns and doorways cut directly into the rock. Together, they show how architecture and religious art were brought into the same space. Gümüşler is a rewarding stop for visitors interested in Byzantine history or looking to explore Cappadocia beyond its familiar valleys.
