About this place
Salih Efendi Street in central Kilis offers a glimpse of the city’s traditional residential architecture through its historic stone houses, wooden doors and windows. Named after Mufti Salih Efendi, the street underwent restoration and streetscape improvements supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2010 and 2011, renewing many of its houses. Traditional Kilis homes are arranged around an inner courtyard known locally as a “havuş.” Windows facing the courtyard, local stone construction and relatively enclosed street façades reflect this inward-looking design.
