About this place
Ravanda Castle stands on a high, cone-shaped hill in Belenözü village, in the Polateli district of Kilis, approximately 24 kilometres northwest of the city. Located east of the Afrin River, the fortress overlooks the surrounding valley and countryside. Surviving sections of the inner walls, defensive towers and two large water cisterns reveal features of its military architecture. An important stronghold during the Middle Ages, Ravanda Castle was used by the Ayyubids and Mamluks before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in 1516. Its original construction date remains uncertain. Among the historic places to visit in Kilis, the castle combines medieval heritage with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
