About this place
Oylum Aidesim Mosaic Basilica is an archaeological site in the Oylum neighbourhood of Kilis, approximately 200 metres southwest of Oylum Höyük. Dating to the 6th century AD, this Early Christian church was built using basalt and limestone. Its rectangular interior was divided into three aisles by two rows of columns. The basilica’s outstanding feature is its colourful mosaic pavement, covering approximately 800 square metres. Plant designs, intersecting circles, diamond patterns and crosses reflect Early Byzantine artistic traditions. Among the archaeological places to visit in Kilis, Aidesim Basilica offers a rewarding stop for travellers interested in ancient architecture and mosaic art. Its proximity to Oylum Höyük makes the two sites a natural pairing for a historical itinerary.
