About this place
Kilis Grand Mosque, also known as Cami-i Kebir, is a historic religious landmark in the Hacı Gümüş neighbourhood. Recognised as the city’s oldest and largest mosque, it forms part of Kilis’s pre-Ottoman architectural heritage. The identities of its original patron and architect remain unknown. The rectangular prayer hall features a dome in front of the mihrab, cross vaults and coloured dressed stonework. Notable details include the muqarnas-decorated mihrab, geometric ornament around the entrance and a minaret with a single balcony. Former madrasa cells line the eastern and western sides of the northern courtyard. For visitors exploring historic mosques in Kilis, the building offers an introduction to the city’s religious and architectural past.
