Standing beside the Murat River in Bingöl’s Genç district, Sebeterias Castle is an ancient defensive site shaped by both history and the rugged landscape of the river valley. Also known as Diziktepe Castle, it is generally associated with the Urartian period and traditionally linked to King Menua, who is believed to have built fortifications to control the region’s highlands and strategic routes. The castle’s location was no accident. The Murat Valley formed part of a route connecting Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia. From its elevated position, the fortress may have helped monitor movement through this important passage. Time and erosion by the Murat River have destroyed much of the original structure. Today, surviving stone walls and archaeological traces offer glimpses of the defensive complex that once stood here. Excavations begun in 2022 have sought to uncover more evidence of the site’s past. Visiting Sebeterias Castle is less about exploring intact ramparts and more about reading history through the remains left in the landscape. Looking across the river valley, it becomes easier to understand why this position mattered centuries ago. For travellers interested in Bingöl’s lesser-known archaeological heritage, the site offers a quieter encounter with the region’s ancient past.

Located within the GSİM Bingöl Youth Center, the Traditional Woodcraft Workshop offers a glimpse into the craftsmanship and cultural knowledge behind traditional woodworking in Bingöl, eastern Türkiye. More than a place where wood is shaped by hand, the workshop represents a tradition built on patience, practical skill, creativity and respect for the work passed down from one generation to the next. The story behind the workshop begins with a craftsman born in Bingöl in 1970. His connection with woodworking started in the workshop of his father, Marangoz Teyfik Usta, who became his first teacher and guide. Working alongside his father during childhood and youth, he learned that craftsmanship demands more than technical ability: it also requires discipline, perseverance and respect for the material. Further experience across different crafts helped him develop a broader philosophy that brings together the practical value of traditional workmanship and the aesthetic depth of art. This approach is rooted in the belief that craft and art complement one another. Woodworking preserves the knowledge of how things are made, while artistic expression gives that knowledge cultural meaning and a new life. Just as important is the responsibility to pass on these skills, ensuring that experience gained over decades does not disappear with a single generation. For visitors interested in discovering the living cultural traditions of Bingöl, the workshop offers a perspective beyond the region’s landscapes and historical landmarks. Its significance lies in the human story behind the craft: knowledge learned in a family workshop, strengthened through years of practice and carried forward as a form of cultural heritage. As the workshop is located inside the GSİM Bingöl Youth Center, visitors should confirm access arrangements and any opportunities to observe or participate in workshop activities before planning a visit.
