Why did my hotel ask for payment in cash?

Some small hotels in Turkey prefer cash to avoid card commissions or because their card terminal is not working. In some cases, they may also request cash to avoid declaring the payment and paying taxes. This is not legal, especially if they refuse to provide an invoice or receipt. Cash payment itself is not necessarily suspicious if it was clearly stated when you booked. However, be careful if the hotel suddenly changes the price, asks you to cancel your online reservation or refuses to give you proof of payment. Always confirm the total amount and request an official receipt or invoice.
