Five days gives you enough time to see Istanbul’s main sights without rushing. You can visit the historic areas, explore both sides of the Bosphorus, try local food and still have time to wander around neighborhoods. Day 1: Sultanahmet and the Old City Start with Sultanahmet. Visit Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern. Since they are close to each other, you can explore them on foot. In the afternoon, walk through the Grand Bazaar and continue towards Eminönü. Try some local street food before heading back to your hotel. Day 2: Galata, Karaköy and Istiklal Start around Galata Tower and explore the streets around Galata and Karaköy. Stop for Turkish coffee or breakfast along the way. Later, walk along Istiklal Street towards Taksim Square. If you want somewhere quieter, explore Cihangir in the evening and have dinner at a local restaurant. Day 3: Bosphorus and Üsküdar Take a ferry and spend part of the day on the Bosphorus. You’ll get great views of both the European and Asian sides. After the ferry ride, explore Üsküdar. Walk along the waterfront and enjoy the view of the Old City across the water. Sunset is especially nice here. Day 4: Kadıköy and Moda Take the ferry to Kadıköy and explore the market, food streets and local shops. This side of Istanbul feels more relaxed and local. Then walk towards Moda. Have lunch, grab a coffee and spend some time by the sea. You don’t need a packed schedule today. Day 5: Balat, Fener and Free Time Explore Fener and Balat in the morning. Walk through the colorful streets, check out the small cafés and see some of Istanbul’s older buildings. Keep the afternoon flexible. You can revisit a place you enjoyed, go shopping, take another ferry ride or simply sit somewhere by the Bosphorus. Quick Tips Five days is a good amount of time for a first Istanbul trip. Use public transport, wear comfortable shoes and avoid putting too many attractions into one day. Leave some free time for food, cafés and simply walking around.
