Turkey eSIM — install before flying, or activate it too? I'm confused

Can someone explain this in plain English? Some posts say install your eSIM before arriving in Turkey. Others say activate it before you leave. Those aren't the same thing... right? I don't want to start a 10-day plan too early, but I also really dont want to land with two tired kids and no working maps. If you've used one recently, which provider did you use and when did the plan actually start? Could you buy more data once you were there? Also, can I keep my US number available for bank verification texts without accidentally triggering roaming charges? The phone settings are honestly the part I'm most worried about. Just trying to get both our phones sorted before the flight. Airport Wi-Fi can't be the whole backup plan 😅

Yep, installing an eSIM and starting its countdown can be two different things. Install it at home on Wi-Fi before flying. For a plan that starts on its first connection in Turkey, you can leave that line switched off until you land. If it starts on installation instead, installing early starts the clock—there’s no phone setting that pauses it. When you land, switch the travel eSIM on and select it for mobile data. Enable data roaming on that travel line if needed. Keep data roaming OFF on your US line and turn OFF automatic mobile-data switching. Basically, the travel line handles your internet; the US line stays available for your number. You can leave the US line switched on for bank texts, but here’s the catch: switching its data off doesn’t magically make SMS free. Incoming texts are free on many US plans, not every plan. Don’t answer regular calls, send SMS or call voicemail on that line unless you’re happy with possible roaming charges. Use internet messaging through the travel eSIM instead. Before leaving, download offline maps on both phones and screenshot your hotel address and transfer instructions. That way, even if the eSIM takes a few minutes to connect, you’re not standing at arrivals with tired kids and a useless loading circle 😅
