bring the small stroller if your toddler still naps. You’ll appreciate it when they’re asleep and you still want to walk around. A carrier helps with awkward bits, but carrying a sleepy toddler all afternoon? No thanks 😅
Sultanahmet’s main squares are manageable. The hassle is uneven paving, high kerbs and narrow pavements in the side streets. Stick to the main streets, and don’t blindly follow walking shortcuts on your phone—they can send you straight to steep steps.
For the Grand Bazaar, take the T1 to Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı and enter from Beyazıt Square. Don’t push all the way uphill from Eminönü through the shopping lanes. Inside, crowds are the bigger headache: people stop in front of you, aisles get blocked and some shops have steps. Go early. Same with the Spice Bazaar—if it’s packed, pushing through with a stroller gets annoying fast.
For Galata, skip the uphill push from Karaköy. Take the T1 to Karaköy, then the historic Tünel up to Beyoğlu. Walk downhill along Galip Dede towards the tower. There’s still a slope and rough paving, but you’ve avoided the big climb. Heading back to Tünel means some uphill walking again, so don’t mistake this for a completely flat route.
The T1 has low-floor trams, so you can normally roll aboard. Space is the problem. Later in the morning helps with commuter crowds, but that stretch can still be busy with tourists. If the doorway is jammed, let that tram go. Use the wider station gate and keep the stroller out of the doorway once you’re on.
I’d take it for Sultanahmet, waterfront walks and anything crossing nap time. For a quick bazaar visit or wandering Galata’s steep backstreets, I’d use the carrier instead.
Just bring one you can lift and fold easily. Leave the heavy stroller at home—you’ll hate carrying it on the steps.
