# My Honest Istanbul Tips for First-Time Visitors If you’re visiting Istanbul for the first time, there are a few things I wish someone had told me before my first trip. I’ve been to Istanbul several times now, and I definitely made some silly mistakes at the beginning. I took the first taxi I saw, sat down at restaurants without checking prices, and tried to see way too much in just a few days. The first thing I’d say is: **don’t arrive expecting everything to be exactly how you imagined it.** Istanbul is a huge city. You’ll meet lovely people, impatient people, honest businesses and some businesses that are clearly more interested in tourists’ money. That’s pretty normal in any major city. ### Getting from the airport Plan this before you arrive. If you’re using public transport, check the route to your hotel beforehand. If you’re taking a taxi, know roughly where your hotel is and put the address into Google Maps. I also recommend checking that the taxi meter is running. Apps such as BiTaksi or iTaksi can be useful too. Personally, if I arrive late or have lots of luggage, I usually book a private transfer in advance. It costs more than public transport, but sometimes the convenience is worth it. ### Food Don’t assume an expensive restaurant is automatically better. Before sitting down, check the menu and prices. If there’s no menu or nobody wants to show you the prices, I’d simply walk away. Some of my favourite meals in Istanbul have been in very ordinary little restaurants. No fancy decoration, no amazing Bosphorus view — just good food and lots of locals eating there. And definitely try a proper Turkish breakfast if you get the chance. ### Be careful with taxis Most of my taxi experiences have been completely fine, but I still pay attention. Know where you’re going, follow the route on your phone if possible, and make sure the meter is being used. If something feels strange, you don’t have to continue the journey. That doesn’t mean every taxi driver is trying to scam tourists. Just use common sense. ### Actually explore the city Sultanahmet is an obvious starting point for a first visit. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the surrounding historical sights are all worth seeing. But don’t spend your entire trip there. Walk around Eminonu, cross Galata Bridge, explore Karakoy, take a ferry, and spend some time on the Asian side in Kadikoy. One of my favourite things about Istanbul is that you can have a completely different experience just by walking a few streets away from the main tourist areas. ### One last tip Don’t try to see everything. I used to plan every hour of my trips. Now I leave time to just wander around, sit somewhere with a Turkish tea and watch the city. Some of my best memories in Istanbul happened when I had absolutely no plan. Do your basic research, check prices, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places, and then relax. Istanbul can be chaotic, loud and exhausting sometimes — but that’s also part of what makes it so memorable. If you’ve been to Istanbul before, what’s one thing you wish you knew before your first visit?
