Is a balloon ride in Cappadocia worth it if you’re scared of heights?

My boyfriend really wants to do a balloon ride in Cappadocia, and I was completely up for it until I watched a video filmed from inside the basket. Now I’m having second thoughts 😅 I’m okay on planes, but standing in a basket with no seatbelt feels like a different situation. If you’re scared of heights and have done it, how did you find it? Could you actually relax and enjoy the view, or were you just waiting for it to be over? It’s a lot of money for us, so I’d hate to book it and then panic before we even take off.

Honestly, I wouldn’t spend that much money just to prove you can handle it. Being fine on planes doesn’t automatically mean you’ll feel comfortable in an open basket. The reassuring bit is that ballooning generally feels more like drifting than a fairground ride. Operators describe a steady basket rather than constant swinging, which can make it less intimidating than the video suggests. But take “you won’t feel scared” claims with a pinch of salt—remember, they’re selling flights. Nobody can promise how you’ll react. Before paying, tell the company exactly what worries you. Ask what happens if you get to the launch site and decide you can’t board, and get the cancellation terms in writing. **A weather cancellation and you changing your mind are different situations.** Don’t assume both mean a refund. The part I’d think about most is being unable to step out when you’ve had enough. Don’t book on the assumption that the pilot can immediately land if you panic. If you’re still curious underneath the nerves, talking it through with the operator might help you decide. If you’re mainly dreading it and going because your boyfriend wants to, I’d skip it. Let him fly and enjoy watching from the ground. You don’t owe anyone an expensive bravery test 😅
