Hello everyone! I'm planning a trip to Istanbul soon, and visiting Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque is high on my list. I've wanted to see this historic landmark for a long time, but the more I research my trip, the more questions I have. I'd really appreciate advice from people who have visited. First, when is the best time to visit Hagia Sophia? Would you recommend going early in the morning, or is the afternoon a good option too? How crowded does it get on weekends and during the summer? Is there a quieter time when I can explore the interior, admire the architecture and take photographs without constantly being surrounded by large groups? I'm also a little confused about admission. Is visiting Hagia Sophia free, or do foreign tourists need to buy a ticket? Are there different arrangements for Turkish citizens and international visitors? If certain areas require paid admission, what exactly does the ticket include? Can tickets be purchased at the entrance, or is it better to buy them online in advance? Are long queues common? Does the MuseumPass or a similar pass provide access? I understand that Hagia Sophia is an active mosque, so how does visiting work around prayer times? Can tourists enter during daily prayers? Are there restrictions on Fridays or religious holidays? Do visitors have access to all designated areas throughout the day, or are some sections temporarily restricted during worship? Where can I check the current visiting hours before arriving? Once inside, what should I make sure not to miss? I'm particularly interested in the enormous dome, Byzantine mosaics, marble columns and features added during the Ottoman period. Are all these features accessible to visitors? Can tourists visit the upper galleries or other parts of the building? Would you recommend hiring a guide to understand the history properly, or is it possible to explore independently? Are English-speaking guides and audio guides available? I'd also like to take photographs. Is photography permitted throughout the visitor areas? Are flash photography and tripods restricted? I'd love to capture the dome and architectural details, but I don't want to disturb people who are praying. Are there areas where photography is prohibited? What should I wear when visiting? Do women need to cover their heads, and are headscarves available at the entrance? Are there dress restrictions for men, such as wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts? Should I bring appropriate clothing with me? Do visitors need to remove their shoes, or can they keep them on in designated visitor areas? I'm also trying to work out the easiest way to get there. Is taking the tram to Sultanahmet station the most convenient option? Is Hagia Sophia within easy walking distance of the station? If I come directly from Istanbul Airport, what would be the most practical route? Is public transport better than taking a taxi? Are there parking facilities nearby for people arriving by car? How long should I allow for the visit? Would one hour be enough, or should I plan for two hours or more? Are there places to sit and rest? Is the visit manageable for older travelers and families with children? Are there many stairs or uneven surfaces, and are there accessibility arrangements for visitors with limited mobility? I'd also like to explore the surrounding area on the same day. Is it realistic to visit Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace in one day? In what order would you recommend visiting them? Are there reasonably priced places to eat nearby, or should I be careful about tourist-area prices? What other historical attractions are within walking distance? Finally, I'd love to hear about your personal experiences. Did you encounter unexpected admission costs, confusing ticket arrangements or long queues? Were any areas closed during your visit? Did the actual experience match what you had read online? Is there anything you wish you had known before going? My goal is not just to see Hagia Sophia, but to appreciate its history while respecting the rules of an active place of worship. I'd be grateful for any practical advice, recommendations or lessons from your visit. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!
