When exploring Istanbul’s historic mosques, Süleymaniye Mosque seems to be near the top of many visitors’ lists. It’s considered one of the most important works of Mimar Sinan, and its location overlooking the Golden Horn and the historic peninsula makes it even more appealing. The photos look impressive, but I’m curious about what visiting the mosque is actually like. Has anyone visited Süleymaniye Mosque recently? Is the interior as impressive in person as it looks in pictures? I’ve read a lot about the massive central dome, the columns, and the decorative details. Can you really take your time and appreciate the architecture when it’s busy, or is it better to visit during quieter hours? Mimar Sinan is often said to have described Süleymaniye Mosque as his “masterwork of the journeyman stage,” or kalfalık eserim in Turkish. When you visit, can you understand why this building is considered such an important achievement? For those who have also visited the Blue Mosque, does Süleymaniye offer a noticeably different experience? I’m also interested in the mosque’s acoustics. Does the sound really carry remarkably well throughout the large prayer hall? And can you appreciate the architectural features without joining a guided tour? One detail I’m particularly curious about is the soot chamber. There’s a well-known story that soot from the mosque’s oil lamps was collected and used to make ink. Is this special room accessible to visitors today? Has anyone seen it or learned more about the story while visiting? I’d also like to explore the surrounding complex. How much time should I allow for Süleymaniye Mosque, the historic buildings around it, and Mimar Sinan’s tomb? Are there good spots nearby to enjoy views of the Golden Horn and take photos? What about visiting hours? Is tourist access paused during prayer times? Would you recommend going early in the morning? And are the dress code requirements similar to those at the Blue Mosque? Finally, is a guided tour worth paying for, or can you explore independently and still appreciate the mosque’s history and architecture? I’d love to hear from people who have actually been there. In particular, I’m interested in the best time to visit, the architectural details not to miss, and any nearby places worth exploring. First-hand experiences and practical tips would be much more helpful than a standard travel guide!
