Ephesus with kids — what’s the actual plan for getting through before everyone overheats?

I really want to see Ephesus, but trying to figure out the logistics with two kids is making my head hurt. One still needs a stroller, and “just go early and bring water” leaves me with about 20 more questions 😅 If we’re staying in Kusadasi, what time should we actually leave the hotel? Would you book a driver or take a taxi, and roughly what should the round trip cost? Also, which entrance makes the most sense? I keep seeing upper gate / lower gate mentioned. If someone drops us at one and picks us up at the other, how do we arrange that without guessing when we’ll finish? My biggest worry is being halfway through with a hot, miserable toddler and no easy way out. Are there shaded places to sit, bathrooms along the route, or somewhere to buy water once you’re inside? Can we bring snacks? And be honest about the stroller. Are we talking a bumpy ride, or actually carrying the thing over steps? I’d happily do a shorter visit and skip extras. What would your realistic route be for a family that wants to see the main sights without turning this into an endurance test?

With your toddler and stroller, I’d use the lower gate and come back out the same way The upper-to-lower route gets recommended because it’s downhill, but once you’ve started, you still have to walk through. Lower gate gives you a simpler option to turn back when the kids have had enough. From central Kuşadası, leave around 7:15–7:30am and get there for the 8am opening. If your resort is further out, leave earlier. I’d arrange a car with child seats and a driver who waits. You don’t need a whole tour package just to get there. For a return taxi with waiting, expect quotes around €60–80. If they quote euros, get the final amount in lira agreed before getting in, including parking and how long they’ll wait. Otherwise “return included” can turn into “waiting costs extra” when you’re ready to leave. Say no shopping stops too—you’re going to Efes, not a carpet showroom. Keep the route simple: lower gate, Great Theatre from ground level, Marble Street, Library of Celsus, then back. Give it about an hour or so, longer only if everyone’s happy. Skip the theatre seating, Terrace Houses and the uphill stretch beyond the library. The stroller will bounce around. Old stone slabs, gaps and awkward edges mean you’ll lift it in places. It’s useful for the lower route, but bring a light one. The Terrace Houses have stairs; I wouldn’t add those with a stroller. Use the toilets at the entrance before going in. Don’t plan your walk around finding another bathroom halfway through. Buy water before reaching the site and bring small snacks. Shade is scarce along the main route, and the marble reflects the sun straight back at you—there isn’t a shady rest spot around every corner. If you do choose upper gate in and lower gate out, agree both gates with the driver, exchange numbers and have them wait at the lower exit. Call when you’re heading out rather than trying to predict exactly when the toddler will surrender 😅 But the car can’t reach you inside the ruins. I’d do the library and theatre, then get back in the car. Leave the extra ruins for another trip.
