Do we really need to book a Bosphorus cruise, or would a regular ferry be just as nice?

It’s our first time visiting Istanbul, and we both really want to see the Bosphorus from the water, but we’ve already gone a bit over budget 😅 I was looking at boat tours and thought, couldn’t we just hop on a regular ferry, sit outside and still get some lovely views? We’d like to spend a decent amount of time on the water rather than just cross over and get straight off. Has anyone done this? Which route would you go for? Also slightly worried about missing the last ferry back and ending up spending a fortune on a taxi.

Honestly, for what you’re after, I’d save the cruise money. You don’t need a dinner package and a sales pitch to enjoy the Bosphorus 😅 A guided cruise can be worth paying for if you want commentary, but just for sitting outside and watching Istanbul go by? A regular ferry does the job beautifully. I’d go from **Eminönü to Sarıyer on the Şehir Hatları Rumeli Kavağı line**. You’re travelling along the Bosphorus rather than just crossing it, and the current timetable gives you roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on the water each way. One detail worth checking: some departures finish at Sarıyer, while others continue to Rumeli Kavağı. My suggestion would be to leave in the morning, get off at Sarıyer, have a wander and something to eat, then come back in daylight. **Choose your return sailing before you board the outward ferry**, and screenshot the timetable from the official Şehir Hatları website. These are scheduled transport services, so don’t assume there’ll be another one whenever you fancy heading back. Also, don’t assume you can stay aboard at the end and automatically ride back—check with the crew and expect to pay for the return journey separately. Get there a little early for an outside seat, and bring a layer even if it feels warm on land. The wind can send you scurrying indoors surprisingly quickly. Tea, a seat and that view—you really don’t need much else.
