Zonguldak Lighthouse: What’s the Story Behind This Little Tower on the Black Sea?

WhatsApp

Built in 1908 in the Yayla neighborhood, the historic Zonguldak Lighthouse stands as a century-old symbol of the city's maritime heritage. Situated 53 meters above sea level, this 9-meter tower guides ships in the Black Sea with a light visible up to 20 nautical miles

From the shore, you see a small tower. From a ship approaching land, that same tower is a sign telling you where the coast lies. That is what makes Zonguldak Lighthouse so compelling: the place where we stop to admire the view is also a point of guidance for people at sea.

Standing on a headland extending into the Black Sea, this historic lighthouse deserves a little time on your Zonguldak itinerary. Its appearance may catch your attention first. Once you learn its story, your gaze begins to move beyond the tower towards the open water.

A Story Stretching Back to 1908

Zonguldak Lighthouse was built in 1908. Dating to the final decades of the Ottoman Empire, it forms part of the city’s maritime heritage.

It is easy to overlook a lighthouse’s purpose when viewing it from land. A pale tower, a beautiful stretch of sea, a few photographs… For a vessel trying to identify the coastline in darkness, however, its light has a practical meaning. Knowing the position of a lighthouse helps establish where the land is.

Try looking at the setting from that perspective. Across the open water, the details so obvious from shore gradually disappear. The lighthouse’s position on this headland begins to make sense.

A Small Tower with a Far-Reaching Light

One detail about Zonguldak Lighthouse deserves clarification: the tower itself is 9 metres tall, while its recorded elevation above sea level is 53 metres. You will not find a towering 53-metre structure here. Its elevated coastal position gives it its reach.

Coastal Safety records list the light’s visibility range as 20 nautical miles, approximately 37 kilometres. That distance puts the modest size of the building into perspective.

The lighthouse has operated using electricity since 1985. Its signal follows a defined pattern: a brief white flash in a five-second cycle. These distinctive light patterns help mariners identify individual lighthouses.

Why Is There a House Beside the Tower?

The single-storey building beside the lighthouse, with its tiled roof, is the keeper’s house. Preserving it alongside the tower offers a glimpse of the working life that once surrounded these coastal structures.

A lighthouse’s story includes the people who maintained it, their daily responsibilities and the experience of living beside the sea.

The building’s simplicity is part of its appeal. You are looking at a structure created for a specific job, one that gradually became part of the city’s shared memory.

Where Is Zonguldak Lighthouse?

The lighthouse stands northeast of Zonguldak city centre, in the Fener area of Yayla neighbourhood. The surrounding settlement also has connections to the city’s mining history. Housing and social facilities developed here for people working in the industry, adding another layer to a visit.

Allow time to walk around the neighbourhood, notice how the buildings sit above the sea and take in the coastline.

Seeing the lighthouse from outside does not necessarily mean that you can enter the tower or keeper’s house. If an interior visit is important to your plans, check the current access arrangements beforehand.

Why Visit Zonguldak Lighthouse?

Much of its beauty comes from the relationship between a modest building and an expansive seascape. On one side are a tiled roof and a small tower; on the other, the Black Sea stretches towards the horizon.

Before taking your final photograph and leaving, turn towards the water once more. The story of Zonguldak Lighthouse reaches beyond the building itself, out into the open sea its light was built to serve.
