You May Have Seen This Station on Screen: Filming at Toprakkale’s Historic Railway Complex

WhatsApp

Toprakkale Station Complex is an 11-structure historic railway site in Osmaniye dating to the Ottoman era. It is famous for hosting scenes of "Bir Zamanlar Çukurova" and "Tatar Ramazan

Imagine standing outside a station you recognise from a television drama. The doorway where a character waited, the building behind them and the tracks stretching into the distance are now in front of you. Toprakkale Historic Railway Station Complex in Osmaniye combines railway heritage with a connection to film and television.

Scenes for Bir Zamanlar Çukurova, internationally known as Bitter Lands, were filmed here. Local reporting also identifies the station as a filming location for Tatar Ramazan, starring Kadir İnanır. Long before the cameras arrived, however, this was a workplace and a place of arrivals, departures and everyday journeys.

Where Is Toprakkale Historic Railway Station Complex?

The complex occupies the railway station grounds in central Toprakkale, Osmaniye. Search for “Toprakkale Tren İstasyonu, Osmaniye” when looking for directions.

The word “complex” matters. This is a group of railway buildings with different functions, rather than a single station building.

From areas where access is permitted, look at how the buildings relate to one another. Keeping a station running required much more than somewhere to receive passengers.

Eleven Buildings, One Railway Settlement

The cultural inventory describes Toprakkale Station Complex as eleven buildings dating from the same period.

The recorded group includes the main station building, a logistics office, a repair and maintenance building, a toilet building and seven staff residences.

Those residences add another dimension to the site. For some people, the station was somewhere they passed through. For railway workers and their families, it formed part of daily life. While passengers arrived and departed, a community continued its routines nearby.

Architectural Details to Look For

The main station building is described as two storeys high, with a hipped roof and broad eaves. Its pointed door and window arches are among the details worth noticing. Other buildings within the complex share similar architectural characteristics.

A hipped roof slopes down towards the walls on several sides. Eaves are the portions of the roof that project beyond those walls. Recognising these features helps you see the building more clearly than simply labelling it an “old station.”

Begin with the whole façade, then study the arrangement of doors and windows. Repeated features across the buildings help reveal the site’s architectural coherence.

Was Bir Zamanlar Çukurova Filmed Here?

Yes. Local reporting records a scene for Bir Zamanlar Çukurova being filmed at Toprakkale Station in May 2021.

Railway stations have a powerful role in period dramas. A journey can mark a departure, a reunion or a turning point in a character’s life. Historic architecture helps establish the setting around that moment.

You may recognise a view when visiting Toprakkale. The confirmed connection, however, concerns filming for a particular scene; it does not mean the entire series was filmed here.

The Tatar Ramazan Connection

The same local report states that Tatar Ramazan, starring Kadir İnanır, also used the station for filming.

This gives Toprakkale a screen history spanning different productions. Details about the specific scenes and extent of filming are not established by that brief account.

Part of the interest lies in seeing an everyday transport setting take on another role. A place built for real journeys becomes the backdrop to fictional ones.

How Does It Relate to the Republican Period?

Toprakkale’s railway history reaches back to the late Ottoman period. Its story did not begin with the founding of the Republic. The Republican years form a later chapter in its continued use and eventual appearances on screen.

There is also a distinction between a production filmed during the Republican era and one whose subject is the Republic’s foundation. Filming at Toprakkale has not been verified for the productions titled Cumhuriyet or Kurtuluş, so they should not be included in its filming credits.

Visiting the Station

Approach the site as railway premises rather than an unrestricted film set. Follow access rules, stay off the tracks and do not enter operational buildings or staff residences without permission. Take photographs only from safe, permitted areas.

Spend a little time looking at the doors, rooflines and arrangement of buildings. A location that appears on screen for a few seconds can have a much longer life beyond the camera. At Toprakkale, that life belongs to railway work and everyday journeys as well as the stories filmed here.
