Will My Foreign Phone Work in Turkey? IMEI, 120 Days & eSIM

WhatsApp

Bringing your iPhone or Android phone to Turkey? Learn how foreign phones work, what the 120-day IMEI rule means, and whether an eSIM works with WhatsApp and Google Maps.

Foreign Phones in Turkey: IMEI, 120 Days and eSIM Explained

Bringing your iPhone or Android phone to Türkiye for a holiday? You may have heard about Turkey's IMEI rules and wondered whether your phone will actually work when you arrive.

For most short-term tourists, there is no need to panic. But there are a few things worth knowing before your trip, especially if you plan to use a Turkish SIM or travel eSIM.

1. Will my foreign phone work in Turkey?

Yes, generally.

If you bring an unlocked phone from the US, UK, Europe or another country, you can normally use it in Türkiye with your existing SIM, international roaming, or a local SIM/eSIM.

Your phone must support the mobile networks used in Türkiye, and it should not be carrier-locked.

The important issue for longer stays is the phone's IMEI registration.

According to Türkiye's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), phones brought from abroad can currently be used for up to 120 days without IMEI registration. If the device is not registered within this period, its mobile communication service can be blocked.

For someone visiting Türkiye for a week or two, this usually isn't an issue.

2. Does an eSIM solve Turkey's IMEI problem?

No.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings about eSIMs in Türkiye.

An eSIM is simply a digital SIM. It replaces the need for a physical SIM card, but it does not remove or change your phone's IMEI.

So switching from a physical SIM to an eSIM does not reset the 120-day period or bypass Turkey's IMEI rules.

If you're coming to Türkiye for a normal holiday, however, you generally don't need to worry about IMEI registration during a short trip.

3. Will my phone be blocked after 120 days in Turkey?

It can be, if the phone is an unregistered device brought from abroad and you continue using it in Türkiye after the permitted period.

BTK currently states that foreign phones can be used for 120 days without registration. If the device isn't registered during that period, it can be blocked from mobile communication networks.

This is much more relevant to people staying in Türkiye for several months than to tourists taking a one- or two-week vacation.

So if you're flying to Istanbul for 10 days, you don't need to buy a Turkish phone simply because of the 120-day rule.

4. Can I use WhatsApp with an eSIM?

Yes.

You can continue using your normal WhatsApp account while using a travel eSIM for mobile data.

For example, you can keep your regular SIM in your phone and use the travel eSIM for data. Your WhatsApp account can continue to use your existing phone number.

Yesim also confirms that its prepaid eSIM can be used with WhatsApp and other messaging apps.

This is useful if you want to stay in touch with family and friends without changing your WhatsApp number.

5. Can I use Google Maps with an eSIM?

Yes.

Google Maps works normally over mobile data, so you can use it with a compatible Turkey travel eSIM.

This can be particularly useful when you're walking around Istanbul, finding your hotel, checking public transport or navigating between tourist attractions.

You can also download areas for offline use, which is a useful backup if your mobile connection becomes unavailable.

A simple setup for tourists

If your phone supports eSIM, a convenient setup is:

Your normal SIM → keep your usual phone number and WhatsApp

Turkey travel eSIM → use it for mobile data while travelling

This means you don't necessarily have to remove your home SIM just because you're using an eSIM.

For example, Yesim's Turkey plans are data-only and can be used alongside a traditional SIM. Its current Turkey plans also allow travelers to install the eSIM before their trip and activate it when needed.

The important thing to remember

If you're visiting Türkiye for a short holiday, the easiest approach is usually to think about internet access, rather than IMEI registration.

Before you fly:

  • Check that your phone is unlocked.
  • Check that it supports eSIM if you want to use one.
  • Decide whether you'll use roaming, a Turkish SIM or a travel eSIM.
  • If you're using a travel eSIM, consider installing it before your flight.
  • Keep your normal SIM if you still need your regular phone number.

For most tourists, this is enough to arrive in Türkiye, open Google Maps, send a WhatsApp message and start exploring without worrying about the technical side of the mobile network.
