Where to Stay in Antalya: Choosing the Right Area
Kaleiçi, Konyaaltı, Lara, Kundu or a resort farther along the coast? Compare Antalya’s best areas by beach type, atmosphere, transport and travel style before booking your hotel.
September 23, 2026
Choosing where to stay in Antalya is more important than choosing the hotel itself. A beautiful property in the wrong area can leave you spending your holiday in traffic, paying for repeated transfers or discovering that the “beach hotel” you booked is nowhere near the Antalya you imagined.
The problem begins with the name. Antalya is both a city and a vast province. A hotel advertised as being in Antalya might sit beside Kaleiçi, on the urban coast at Konyaaltı, among the resorts of Kundu, or much farther away in Belek, Kemer, Side or Alanya.
None of these locations is automatically better than the others. They simply offer different holidays.
For most first-time visitors, the choice can be simplified like this:
Kaleiçi: Best for history, atmosphere and short city breaks
Konyaaltı: Best for combining a long beach with city life
Lara: Best for restaurants, local urban life and access to the eastern side
Kundu: Best for large all-inclusive resorts near Antalya Airport
Belek: Best for luxury resorts, golf and a hotel-focused holiday
Kemer: Best for mountains, clear water and a resort town atmosphere
Side: Best for a beach holiday with ancient ruins nearby
Alanya: Best for a lively, self-contained coastal city and longer stays
Here is what staying in each area actually feels like—and what booking websites often fail to explain.
First, Decide Whether You Want Antalya City or Antalya Province
If you want to visit Kaleiçi, Antalya Museum, Konyaaltı Beach, Lara and the Düden Waterfalls, stay in Antalya city. The most practical urban bases are Kaleiçi and the surrounding Muratpaşa district, Konyaaltı, or Lara.
If your priority is a private beach, a large pool complex, several hotel restaurants and an all-inclusive package, a resort area such as Kundu, Belek, Kemer or Side may suit you better.
Do not assume you can easily move between all these areas every evening. Coastal distances are larger than they appear, and summer traffic can turn a simple-looking journey into a substantial transfer.
Before booking any accommodation:
Open the exact property on a map.
Check its distance from Antalya Airport.
Check its distance from Kaleiçi, not just “Antalya center.”
Look at the actual walking route to the beach.
Read recent comments about road noise, nightlife and hotel access.
The pin on the map tells you more than the destination label.
Kaleiçi: Best for History, Atmosphere and First-Time City Breaks
Kaleiçi is Antalya’s walled old town, a maze of narrow streets, restored Ottoman-era houses, small courtyards and lanes descending toward the historic marina. Hadrian’s Gate stands near its eastern edge, while restaurants, bars, boutique hotels and souvenir shops fill the historic center.
What Staying in Kaleiçi Feels Like
You step outside your hotel and immediately feel that you are somewhere distinctive. Breakfast may be served in a stone courtyard shaded by citrus trees. In the evening, you can walk to dinner, explore the harbor and return without arranging transport.
Kaleiçi is particularly rewarding early in the morning, before day visitors fill the streets. Staying overnight lets you experience the old town during its quieter hours.
Kaleiçi Is Best For
First-time visitors staying two to four nights
Couples and solo travelers
History and architecture lovers
Travelers who enjoy boutique hotels
Visitors who want restaurants and evening atmosphere nearby
Anyone planning to explore the city without a car
Reasons Not to Stay in Kaleiçi
Kaleiçi is not the best choice if your main goal is a long sandy beach or a quiet resort holiday. Mermerli Beach provides a small swimming option, but it is not comparable with the long shores of Konyaaltı or Lara.
The old town also has practical drawbacks:
Cobbled and uneven streets can be difficult with heavy suitcases, wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Vehicle access is restricted in some lanes.
Parking can be inconvenient.
Rooms in restored buildings may be smaller or less soundproof than modern hotel rooms.
Music from nearby bars can continue late, especially in summer.
Ask your hotel exactly where a taxi can stop. “Located in Kaleiçi” may mean a charming two-minute walk through a pedestrian lane—or an awkward luggage journey if you are not prepared.
Best Part of Kaleiçi to Choose
If you want nightlife, stay close to the livelier bar streets and marina. If you want better sleep, look near the quieter outer edges and read reviews specifically mentioning nighttime noise. A room facing an internal courtyard may be calmer than one facing a busy lane.
Konyaaltı: Best Beach-and-City Balance
Konyaaltı sits west of central Antalya and stretches along one of the city’s two main beaches. It is the easiest answer for travelers who want a genuine beach holiday without giving up access to museums, restaurants and urban transport.
The beach is mostly pebbled rather than sandy. The water is often beautifully clear, but it can become deep relatively quickly. Behind the coast are parks, cafés, apartments and a long promenade, with the mountains forming a dramatic backdrop.
What Staying in Konyaaltı Feels Like
Konyaaltı feels open, modern and residential compared with Kaleiçi. You can swim in the morning, eat in a neighborhood restaurant and travel into the historic center later.
It is less visually historic than Kaleiçi, but more practical for travelers who want beach access every day.
Konyaaltı Is Best For
Travelers who want both a city and beach holiday
Independent travelers rather than all-inclusive guests
Couples and families
Longer stays
Visitors who enjoy promenades, parks and casual restaurants
People who prefer a local neighborhood atmosphere
Reasons Not to Stay in Konyaaltı
Choose another area if you dislike pebble beaches or expect to walk to Kaleiçi in a few minutes. Konyaaltı is connected to the wider city, but it is not part of the old town.
The district is also large. Some hotels described as being in Konyaaltı may be close to the beach; others sit considerably farther inland. Always check the walking route rather than relying on the district name.
Water shoes can make the shoreline more comfortable. Families with small children should also look carefully at the exact beach section and swimming conditions.
Which Part of Konyaaltı?
The eastern end places you closer to Antalya Museum and central attractions. Areas farther west can feel more residential and may offer easier access toward the western coastal road. Stay near the seafront if daily swimming is your priority, but expect some summer activity and road noise around popular sections.
Lara: Best for Urban Comfort, Restaurants and the Eastern Side
Lara is one of the most misunderstood labels in Antalya accommodation searches. It can refer broadly to the residential coastal districts east of the center, to Lara Beach farther east, or even to resort properties in Kundu that use “Lara” in their marketing.
These are not the same experience.
Urban Lara and Şirinyalı
The urban Lara side—particularly areas around Şirinyalı, Fener, Çağlayan and Güzeloba—offers modern apartments, restaurants, cafés, shopping and views from Antalya’s famous cliffs.
This is a good base if you prefer normal city life over a historic tourist district. The Lower Düden Waterfall is on this side of the city, and the airport is generally more convenient than it is from the far western districts.
However, much of the urban coastline sits on cliffs. A sea-view hotel in Lara does not automatically have a sandy beach directly outside its door. Some properties provide platforms or access points down the cliffs, while the long sandy Lara Beach lies farther east.
Lara Is Best For
Couples who like restaurants and modern city life
Business travelers and longer stays
Visitors who want to be closer to the airport
Travelers planning to explore the eastern side of Antalya
People who prefer modern hotels and apartments
Reasons Not to Stay in Urban Lara
Do not book solely because a listing says “Lara Beach area.” Check whether the property is actually walkable to the sand. A hotel can have a magnificent Mediterranean view while sitting several kilometers from a traditional beach.
Lara also stretches across a wide urban area. Your experience changes depending on whether you stay near the cliffs, Düden Park, Güzeloba or the beach road.
Kundu: Best for Large All-Inclusive Resorts
Kundu is the resort corridor east of Antalya, commonly marketed together with Lara. It is home to many large themed hotels with private beach areas, pools, entertainment programs, children’s facilities and multiple restaurants.
If your idea of a holiday is to check in, unpack once and have almost everything provided, Kundu is one of the easiest choices near Antalya.
What Staying in Kundu Feels Like
The hotel is usually the destination. Guests spend most of their time within the resort or along the beach, leaving for selected excursions rather than exploring a neighborhood every evening.
The sandy coast is a major advantage for travelers who do not enjoy Konyaaltı’s pebbles. The area is also relatively convenient for Antalya Airport compared with more distant resort towns.
Kundu Is Best For
All-inclusive holidays
Families who want extensive hotel facilities
Travelers prioritizing sandy beach access
Short resort breaks
Visitors who prefer organized entertainment
Guests who plan only one or two excursions
Reasons Not to Stay in Kundu
Kundu is less suitable if your priority is walking through historic streets, finding independent local restaurants every night or experiencing ordinary city life.
You can visit Kaleiçi, but it is not outside the hotel gate. Taxi and transfer costs can add up if you travel into central Antalya repeatedly.
Check what the package actually includes. “All-inclusive” definitions differ between hotels, particularly for imported drinks, à la carte restaurants, beach cabanas, spa services and late-night food.
Belek: Best for Luxury Resorts and Golf
Belek lies east of Antalya and is internationally known for large resorts and golf facilities. Many hotels have landscaped grounds, private beach areas, spas, sports facilities and extensive family programs.
Belek Is Best For
Golf holidays
High-end all-inclusive stays
Families wanting resort activities
Couples looking for spa and hotel facilities
Travelers who do not need to visit Antalya city every day
Visitors interested in Perge, Aspendos or the eastern side
What to Know Before Booking Belek
Belek is a resort destination rather than a suburb of central Antalya. Staying there for a peaceful week can be ideal. Staying there while planning nightly dinners in Kaleiçi is inefficient.
The town center, Kadriye area and beachfront resort zone offer different experiences. A hotel may feel self-contained and sit away from ordinary restaurants or shops. Check the property’s exact position and whether you want hotel isolation or access to a town center.
Belek works especially well when you intend to use the resort facilities enough to justify the booking.
Kemer: Best for Mountains, Clear Water and Scenic Resorts
Kemer lies southwest of Antalya between the Mediterranean and the steep mountains of the western coast. Pine-covered slopes, clear water and dramatic scenery give it a different character from the flatter resort areas east of the city.
The wider Kemer region includes places such as Beldibi, Göynük, Kiriş, Çamyuva and Tekirova. A hotel marketed as “Kemer” may be in one of these separate resort communities rather than Kemer town itself.
Kemer Is Best For
Travelers who want mountain and sea scenery
Resort guests who also like a walkable town center
Boat trips and water activities
Visitors interested in Phaselis or the western coast
Couples and families
Travelers who enjoy clear water and do not require fine sand
Reasons Not to Stay in Kemer
Many beaches around Kemer are pebbled or mixed rather than soft sand. Check the exact hotel beach if this matters to you.
Kemer is also outside Antalya city. It is possible to take a day trip to Kaleiçi, but staying in Kemer is not the same as having central Antalya at your doorstep.
The town can feel lively and tourism-focused in summer, while smaller surrounding resorts may be quieter and more dependent on hotel facilities.
Side: Best for Beaches and Ancient History Together
Side lies east of Antalya on a peninsula near Manavgat. Its unusual advantage is that ancient ruins, restaurants, coastal views and a resort holiday exist close together.
You can walk past archaeological remains on the way to dinner and watch the sunset near the Temple of Apollo. Around the historic center, broader hotel zones extend through places such as Kumköy, Evrenseki, Çolaklı, Sorgun and Titreyengöl.
Side Is Best For
Travelers who want sandy beaches and history
Couples and families
Resort guests who still want a walkable old center
Visitors interested in Aspendos and Manavgat
A one-week holiday outside Antalya city
Reasons Not to Stay in Side
Side is not central Antalya. A hotel search may show “Side” even when the property is several kilometers from the ancient center. Some resort zones require a bus or taxi to reach the old town.
Look carefully at whether you are booking:
Inside or near historic Side
Near the western beach
In the eastern resort areas
In Sorgun or Titreyengöl
In a wider Manavgat coastal district
Each offers a different balance of walking, beach access and resort facilities.
Alanya: Best for a Lively, Self-Contained Coastal City
Alanya sits far east of Antalya city and deserves to be treated as a destination in its own right. It has a historic castle, a busy town center, beaches, restaurants, nightlife and a large year-round residential population.
Cleopatra Beach is one of its best-known coastal areas, while resort districts extend east and west of the center.
Alanya Is Best For
Longer beach holidays
Travelers who want an active town beyond the hotel
Nightlife and restaurant choice
Visitors happy to explore the eastern Antalya coast
People who prefer staying in one self-contained destination
Winter or long-stay visitors seeking a functioning city
Reasons Not to Stay in Alanya
The transfer from Antalya Airport can be lengthy. Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport may be more convenient for some flights, but routes vary.
Do not stay in Alanya if your main priority is seeing central Antalya every day. It makes more sense to enjoy Alanya itself and explore nearby eastern attractions.
As elsewhere, “Alanya” covers a broad area. Mahmutlar, Oba, Avsallar and other districts are not interchangeable with the castle and central beach zone.
What About Kaş?
Kaş is one of the most appealing towns in Antalya Province, but it is too far from Antalya city to be treated as an alternative central neighborhood.
Choose Kaş if you want a smaller, atmospheric coastal town, boat trips around Kekova, diving and a slower western-coast experience. Stay several nights rather than attempting to use it as a quick base for both Kaş and Antalya city.
Kaş has limited large sandy beaches in the center, with swimming platforms, small coves and beaches reached by short transport. It suits independent travelers particularly well but requires different planning from a large resort holiday.
Best Antalya Area by Travel Style
Best for First-Time Visitors
Choose Kaleiçi for a short cultural trip or Konyaaltı for the best city-and-beach balance.
Best for Families
Choose Kundu or Belek for extensive resort facilities and sandy beach access. Choose Konyaaltı if your family prefers apartments, city restaurants and an independent routine.
Best for Couples
Choose Kaleiçi for atmosphere, Lara for modern restaurants and city comfort, or Kemer for mountain-and-sea scenery.
Best for Nightlife
Choose Kaleiçi for bars in a historic setting, Kemer for seasonal resort nightlife or Alanya for a larger, lively coastal city.
Best for a Sandy Beach
Consider Lara Beach, Kundu, Belek, Side or parts of Alanya. Konyaaltı and much of the Kemer coastline are primarily pebbled or mixed.
Best Without a Car
Choose Kaleiçi, central Muratpaşa, Konyaaltı or urban Lara for access to Antalya’s public transport. Central Side, Kemer town and central Alanya can also work without a car if you plan to remain within those destinations.
Best for an All-Inclusive Holiday
Choose Kundu, Belek, Kemer or Side, then compare the actual hotel facilities rather than judging only by the district.
Best for Ancient Sites
Choose central Antalya for Perge and Termessos, Belek for Perge and Aspendos, or Side for ancient Side, Aspendos and the eastern route.
Best for a Long Stay or Remote Work
Consider Konyaaltı, urban Lara or central Alanya. These areas offer residential services, supermarkets, restaurants and a life beyond seasonal hotel facilities.

Booking Mistakes to Avoid
Believing Every “Lara” Hotel Is on Lara Beach
Some are in urban cliffside districts; others are in Kundu’s resort zone. Verify the map and beach access.
Assuming “Antalya” Means the City Center
The property may be in another town or resort district within Antalya Province.
Measuring Only Straight-Line Distance
A hotel may appear close to the sea while the walking route requires a long detour, steep access or a private hotel entrance.
Ignoring Nighttime Noise
Kaleiçi and lively resort centers can be loud. Read reviews from guests who stayed in the same room category or building section.
Booking an All-Inclusive Hotel for a Sightseeing Trip
You may pay for meals and facilities you rarely use while spending additional money on transport.
Choosing a Remote Resort Without Checking What Is Nearby
If you want independent restaurants, shops and evening walks, make sure they exist outside the property.
Forgetting the Airport Transfer
A good room deal can become less attractive after a long private transfer. Check both Antalya Airport and, where relevant, Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport.
Which Area Should You Choose?
If this is your first Antalya trip and you want to see the city, choose Kaleiçi for atmosphere or Konyaaltı for beach access. Choose urban Lara if modern restaurants, airport convenience and the eastern side matter more than old-town charm.
If you want a hotel-centered holiday with a sandy beach, choose Kundu or Belek. Choose Kemer for dramatic mountain scenery and clear water, Side for the strongest combination of resort beaches and ancient ruins, or Alanya for a longer holiday in a lively coastal city.
The right Antalya area is not the one with the most famous name or the largest hotel. It is the place that reduces the journeys you do not want and makes the experiences you do want easy.
Choose the area first. Then choose the hotel.
