When summer heat comes up in conversation in Osmaniye, the name Zorkun is rarely far behind. For generations, the road into the mountains has drawn people upwards for cooler air, time among the trees and a summer life away from the plain.
Set in the Amanos Mountains at approximately 1,650 metres above sea level, Zorkun Plateau is one of Osmaniye’s long-established highland settlements. Its appeal extends beyond the scenery. This is a place where people spend the summer, open their homes and continue their everyday routines at a different altitude.
Where Is Zorkun Plateau?

Zorkun lies southeast of central Osmaniye, in the Amanos Mountains, approximately 26 kilometres away by road.
Although the distance looks short on a map, this is a mountain journey. Road conditions, traffic and weather can affect travelling time. If it is your first visit, arriving in daylight will also help you become familiar with the surroundings.
Olukbaşı and Ürün plateaus are also associated with the route towards Zorkun. If you want to include several stops, leave enough time to enjoy each one.
What Makes Zorkun Special?

Pine, cedar and fir trees are among the defining features of Zorkun’s natural surroundings. While walking, look beyond distant views to the tree trunks, openings between branches and places where woodland meets the settlement.
Highland culture is another part of its appeal. Some visitors come for the day; others settle into summer homes. Zorkun should therefore be understood as a seasonal community rather than an isolated camping spot.
Summer can bring considerable activity. If you prefer a quieter visit, consider your choice of day and arrival time.
How Can You Spend a Day Here?

You do not need a tightly packed itinerary. A walk around the settlement, a suitable woodland route and a meal can make a satisfying day.
Before heading out, establish your walking distance and return point. Ask someone familiar with the area about routes instead of following an unfamiliar trail without a plan.
For photographs, look for views that bring the highland houses and trees together. Respect private homes, avoid entering gardens and ask permission before photographing people.
What Should You Eat at Zorkun?

Zorkun tava, the dish bearing the plateau’s name, is worth considering when exploring Osmaniye’s cuisine. Diced lamb, tomatoes, green peppers and garlic come together, with much of the flavour gathering in the cooking juices.
After a walk, try a mouthful of meat, then dip some bread into the tomato-and-garlic juices. Each reveals a different side of the dish.
If you have a particular restaurant in mind, confirm that it is open. Services on the plateau may vary with the season.
Day Trip or Overnight Stay?
Zorkun can be visited on a day trip from Osmaniye. Even for a short outing, bring an extra layer rather than preparing solely for temperatures in the city below.
For an overnight visit, arrange accommodation beforehand. The presence of summer houses does not mean they are available to rent. If you intend to camp, check suitable locations, current permissions and fire restrictions locally.
Plan your drinking water, food and personal supplies, particularly outside the summer season when services may be limited.
What stays with you after Zorkun may be a walk among the trees or a conversation over lunch. Sometimes the pleasure of a highland visit is simply having enough time to enjoy the place you came to see.
