Tuzluca Salt Caves: A Dreamlike Underground World You Must See in Türkiye
Located in Iğdır's Tuzluca district, these historic salt caves contain vast rock salt reserves mined since the Hittite era. A section now serves as a Salt Therapy Center with a 12°C microclimate.

You look at the walls: salt. You raise your eyes, and the ceiling belongs to the same enormous deposit. The familiar substance you sprinkle over food surrounds you on a scale that is difficult to grasp. The first surprise at Tuzluca Salt Caves is seeing salt as a mountain you can walk inside.
Located within Salt Mountain in the town of Tuzluca, Iğdır, the caves consist of galleries opened through generations of salt extraction. Walking through the sections prepared for visitors, you encounter the textures of rock salt alongside traces of the work that created these underground spaces.
A visit brings a complete change of surroundings to a Tuzluca trip. Open hills and wide skies give way to passages extending into the mountain.
How Were the Salt Caves Formed?
There are two stories to distinguish here: the natural formation of the rock salt deposits and the excavation of the galleries visitors explore today.
The salt bed formed through geological processes. The large chambers within it were shaped by years of mining. These spaces therefore have a different history from caves carved out by flowing water.
That distinction adds meaning to the visit. Looking at the walls, you see both an underground natural resource and the result of human labour. People worked here to reach the salt, extract it and carry it out.
Something we use so casually at the table takes on a different significance when we see the scale of the landscape and work behind it.
Underground Galleries That Open Like Rooms
Among the caves’ most striking features are their room-like galleries. Passages lead into wider spaces, repeatedly reminding you that you are inside a mountain.
From a distance, the walls can appear uniform. Look more closely and variations in colour, veins and textures become visible. Lighting reveals these details, while the contrast between illuminated surfaces and shadow gives the chambers depth.
Allow your attention to wander beyond the next passage. A small section of wall beside you can become as absorbing as the wider gallery.
Leave the surfaces intact. Avoid scratching the walls or removing crystals and pieces of salt; seeing these textures in place is part of the experience.
From Iğdır’s Summer Heat into Mountain Coolness
The caves are also known for their cool interior. The temperature inside is described as approximately 12°C, creating a noticeable contrast with the outdoor heat in summer.
After exploring Tuzluca under the sun, entering the cool galleries changes the pace of the day. Even if escaping the heat first brings you inside, the surrounding salt surfaces soon give you other reasons to stay.
Bring a light extra layer if you are travelling in summer clothes. It will make a longer visit more comfortable.
Also Known as the Salt Therapy Centre
The sections developed for tourism are also known as the Salt Therapy Centre. Following work carried out between 2019 and 2021, the visitor areas became part of Tuzluca’s tourism offering.
You can come simply to explore the galleries, see the salt deposit up close and experience an unusual underground setting.
The word “therapy” does not mean that visiting will cure a medical condition. Enjoy the caves as a destination without treating the experience as a substitute for medical care.
A Place Where Photographs Reveal the Scale
A person standing within one of the larger galleries helps show the size of the underground space. Textured walls and passages opening behind one another add depth to photographs.
The lighting creates a different setting from the daylight outside. Illuminated surfaces draw the eye, while shadows define the edges of the chambers.
Stay on the designated visitor route and keep passages clear when taking photographs. Access to the tourism galleries does not mean that every part of the mine is open to explore.
Can You Visit the Rainbow Hills on the Same Day?
Tuzluca Salt Caves and the Rainbow Hills can be combined in the same district itinerary. Together, they reveal two very different sides of Tuzluca.
At the Rainbow Hills, you look across coloured slopes beneath an open sky. Inside the salt caves, your attention turns towards walls, ceilings and chambers within the mountain.
Choose the order according to the weather, available daylight and the caves’ current visiting hours. Leave enough time to enjoy both without rushing.
Where Are Tuzluca Salt Caves?
The caves are inside Salt Mountain in the town of Tuzluca, Iğdır, eastern Türkiye. Select the tourist entrance when planning your journey and follow visitor signs rather than routes leading towards production areas.
Check admission prices, opening hours and any guided-visit arrangements before travelling. Comfortable walking shoes and an extra layer for the cool interior are useful preparations.
After leaving Tuzluca, a grain of salt may remind you of this place: a tiny crystal in your hand, and the memory of an entire mountain around you.
