Sekapark, Kocaeli: The Factory Story Behind This Waterfront View

WhatsApp

Transformed from a historic 1936 paper mill, Sekapark is now a premier coastal park along the Gulf of Izmit. It blends vast green spaces and cycling paths with the SEKA Paper Museum, showcasing the city's proud industrial heritage

Would a paper factory cross your mind while walking beside the sea? At Sekapark, it should. The grounds now filled with lawns, walking paths and places to pause for tea once stood at the heart of İzmit’s industrial life. The people who worked here, the pulp that became paper and the years spent tending machinery live on in the park’s name: SEKA.

Set on the shores of the Gulf of İzmit, in Kocaeli’s İzmit district, Sekapark is a lovely place to spend time by the water. Its past gives the waterfront another layer of interest. Once you know the story of the ground beneath your feet, the old factory buildings begin to look different.

From Paper Production to a Gathering Place for the City

The first paper was produced at İzmit Paper Factory in 1936. The factory played an important role in the industrial development of the early Turkish Republic, becoming closely woven into İzmit’s working life and identity.

After the factory grounds were transferred to the municipality, the site began its transformation into a waterfront park for public use. Sekapark’s first phase opened in 2007.

Part of the transformation involved giving former industrial buildings new cultural uses, preserving a connection with the site’s working past. Spending time here offers a glimpse into the history that helped shape İzmit.

The Best Part of Sekapark: An Unhurried Walk Beside the Water

You do not need a packed itinerary to enjoy Sekapark. Head towards the waterfront and start walking.

The open water of the gulf stretches out on one side, with lawns and trees on the other. Places to sit along the shore let you break the walk into small, leisurely pauses. Cyclists pass by, children spend time in the playgrounds, and different groups share the waterfront at their own pace.

There is no need to fill every minute. Sitting on a bench watching the water, having a long conversation or staying a little longer after finishing your coffee can be the whole point of coming.

For visitors who associate Kocaeli mainly with factories, roads and heavy traffic, this stretch of shoreline reveals another side of everyday life in the city.

Stay as the Light Changes

For anyone who enjoys photography, part of Sekapark’s appeal is its broad view across the gulf. The shoreline, paths, trees and sky give the scene depth without demanding much searching.

As the light softens towards evening, the waterfront changes. On clear days, reflections become more noticeable on the water. Under cloudier skies, the colours of the gulf and the sky draw closer together.

You may find yourself turning around during your walk and noticing that the shore you have just passed looks more striking from this new angle. Taking photographs at Sekapark gives you a good reason to slow down and spend longer beside the water.

Add the SEKA Paper Museum to Your Visit

To understand the story behind the park, make time for the SEKA Paper Museum.

Opened in 2016 within the former factory grounds, the museum explores paper production, SEKA’s history and the working life that developed here. Production machinery and displays about the factory draw attention to the labour behind something most of us handle without a second thought.

A notebook page, a book or a newspaper all begin with a manufacturing process that is easy to overlook. The museum brings that process into focus.

Returning to the waterfront afterwards gives the visit a satisfying connection: the industrial past you have just explored and the park’s present-day life occupy the same grounds. Check the museum’s visiting days and opening hours separately when planning your trip.

Visiting Sekapark with Children or Friends

Playgrounds, cycle paths, open spaces and places to eat and drink make Sekapark an easy place to spend time together.

Families can take breaks at the play areas, while friends can walk along the waterfront and stop for a drink. If you are visiting alone, a long walk or a quiet seat facing the gulf is reason enough to come.

Its location in central İzmit also makes Sekapark a convenient addition to a city visit. After exploring the centre, head down to the shore and leave the rest of the day open. When you find yourself stopping for one last look at the water before leaving, it becomes easier to understand why this park holds such a familiar place in the city’s daily life.
