You are standing in front of a round doorway. Above it sits a roof covered in greenery, with trees rising around the little house. The place you first spotted in a photograph is finally right in front of you. But at Ormanya, some of the best moments come after you put the camera down. Further along, paths lead into the woods, a library invites you to read beneath the trees, and animals keep children watching far longer than their parents expected.
Ormanya Wildlife Park lies in Uzuntarla, in Kocaeli’s Kartepe district. Its protected nature park covers 189.84 hectares, with different areas to explore throughout the day. You do not need the figures to appreciate its scale. Once you start walking, you soon understand why visiting a few spots near the entrance would leave so much unseen.
Ormanköy: The Little Houses You Have Seen in Photographs
One of Ormanya’s best-known attractions is Ormanköy, home to the small, round-doored buildings commonly called Hobbit houses.
Their charm comes partly from their proportions. In place of familiar building façades, you find little structures that seem to settle into the earth and greenery. Curved roofs, rounded doorways and surrounding plants give the scene its storybook character.
It is easy to understand why children love them. The adults waiting for their turn to take a photograph suggest that age has little to do with their appeal.
Treat Ormanköy as the beginning of your visit. Leave time for the rest of the park, and you will discover how much lies beyond these much-photographed houses.
The Forest Library: Stay for a Few More Pages

One of Ormanya’s loveliest ideas is its Forest Library.
Reading outdoors is a pleasure in itself. Among the trees, your attention moves gently between the page and your surroundings. You can look up towards the branches, pause at a bird call, then return to the sentence where you left off.
You do not have to settle in for an entire book. Sharing a few pages with a child, browsing a title or simply sitting down between walks makes this a rewarding stop.
Give yourself time here. One of the moments you remember most might be the stretch of the day when you had nowhere else to be.
The Children’s Animal Farm: Familiar Animals, Seen Up Close

The Children’s Animal Farm is among the most exciting stops for younger visitors. Seeing goats, rabbits and ponies brings animals they know from books and screens into the world in front of them.
Watching how an animal walks, eats or reacts to its surroundings can set off a stream of questions. Leaving room for those questions is part of the pleasure of visiting together.
Watch from the designated visitor areas and follow staff instructions about feeding. Offering a snack may feel friendly, but different animals have different dietary needs.
Ormanya’s wildlife areas also accommodate species including roe deer, fallow deer and gazelles. What you see depends on the section you visit and where the animals are at that moment. Take your time and let observation become part of the experience.
Follow the Paths into the Forest

After Ormanköy and the animal areas, make time for the walking trails. This is where the pace of the visit begins to change.
Your attention shifts towards smaller details: light filtering between leaves, the different textures of tree trunks and plants growing beside the path. The same woodland takes on a different character through the seasons. Fresh spring foliage and fallen autumn leaves give each walk its own colours and atmosphere.
The park also has cycling trails and a Botanical Trail where visitors can become more familiar with different plants. Checking the map near the entrance helps you connect the sections you want to see without unnecessary backtracking.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. Woodland paths can become muddy after rain, so footwear suited to the conditions makes the day more enjoyable.
There Is Care Behind the Wildlife You See

Ormanya also includes a Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, which cares for injured wild animals and those needing assistance.
Knowing this adds meaning to the visit. Behind the public areas is ongoing work to care for animals and support their welfare.
The Nature School, birdwatching areas and insect hotel also encourage visitors to notice creatures that are easily overlooked. Anyone hoping to join an organised activity or workshop should check the current programme before visiting.
Give Ormanya More Than a Quick Photo Stop

Ormanya has picnic areas, resting places, children’s play areas and designated camping sections. Visitors planning to camp should check reservation requirements and site rules in advance.
For a day trip, a few favourite stops combined with a walk and generous breaks make a satisfying plan. Take photographs in Ormanköy, watch the animals, follow a woodland path and sit for a while at the library. Allow yourself to enjoy each place without trying to complete every section.
Those little fairytale houses may be what bring you to Ormanya. On the way home, you might find yourself wishing you had left more time for the forest.
