Menekşe Plateau: Have You Discovered This Green Retreat in Kocaeli’s Forests?

WhatsApp

Situated at an altitude of 1,050 meters in Kocaeli's Başiskele district, Menekşe Plateau is a scenic highland surrounded by dense beech and pine forests. Popular for camping at Papaz Meadow and hiking along the Aytepe trail, it offers a peaceful escape named after its native wild violets

Walking between the trees, you catch the landscape in fragments. One trunk beyond another, patches of sky between the branches… Then the forest opens, revealing meadows and a handful of highland houses. Menekşe Plateau’s beauty becomes clear the moment you reach that open ground.

Located in the Samanlı Mountains in Kocaeli’s Başiskele district, Menekşe Plateau sits at an elevation of 1,050 metres. Surrounded by beech, hornbeam and pine trees, it draws visitors interested in walking, camping and nature photography.

Leave a little room in your schedule when you come. Part of the pleasure is having time to stop and look around.

Named After the Flowers Growing Here

Menekşe Plateau takes its name from the violets found in the surrounding area. Its name comes from a small flower growing in the landscape.

Knowing this encourages you to notice more than the broad views. Your eyes begin to wander towards the plants in the meadows and beside the paths. Wild thyme, wild strawberries and St John’s wort also grow in the area.

You do not have to keep moving to discover something. Pausing beneath a tree can reveal details you missed while walking. Leave the plants where they grow and enjoy observing or photographing them.

Highland Life Among the Trees

A small number of highland houses stand at Menekşe. They are a reminder that this landscape belongs to local life as well as visiting walkers. People also use the plateau as a seasonal place to stay.

The houses and forest-fringed clearings create a setting reminiscent of Black Sea highlands. Menekşe has its own character, shaped by the woodland behind the houses, trees bordering the meadows and paths passing between them.

For photography lovers, that combination is part of the appeal. A person standing in a meadow helps convey the openness of the surroundings. Houses pictured against the trees preserve a glimpse of highland life.

Walking to Menekşe Plateau

The Aytepe–Menekşe Plateau route is among Başiskele’s established nature-walking trails. It offers a way to experience woodland and highland scenery within the same outing.

The changing landscape is part of the enjoyment. Between the trees, your attention settles on nearby details. As you reach a clearing, a wider view opens before you. The walk becomes part of discovering the plateau.

Decide on your starting and finishing points before setting out. Different approaches to the same destination do not have identical distances or difficulty levels. Follow your chosen route, carry an offline map and check the weather before walking.

Spending a Night Under Canvas

Menekşe Plateau and nearby Papaz Çayırı are associated with camping. They appeal to visitors who want to spend more time in a highland setting surrounded by woodland.

However, there are no tourist facilities on the plateau. Bring drinking water, food and the equipment you need. Plan to be self-sufficient rather than relying on electricity, showers or other services.

Check current camping and forest-use rules before pitching a tent. Respect the houses and land in use, follow fire restrictions and carry your rubbish back with you.

Leaving the plateau as you found it is part of spending time here.

How Do You Reach Menekşe Plateau?

Menekşe Plateau can be approached via Yuvacık–Aytepe or via Bahçecik–Servetiye Karşı.

Distinguish vehicle access from walking trails when planning your journey. Confirm which approach you intend to use and check the condition of the final section locally. Forest roads are affected by rainfall and seasonal conditions.

Arrange your journey so that you arrive during daylight, allowing time beyond the navigation estimate.

Make Time for Nature in Kocaeli

Menekşe Plateau rewards attention to the whole setting: the woodland, meadows, plants and highland houses.

You do not need a long activity list to enjoy a day here. Walk, pause somewhere comfortable and take a break with the food you have brought. Alongside the wider scenery, look for the smaller details worth remembering.

When you return home, you may remember more than the view of the plateau. That first moment of stepping out from the trees into the meadow can stay with you too.
