Inkaya Plane Tree: Listening to Six Centuries Beneath Its Branches

WhatsApp

Located in Inkaya neighbourhood on the road to Mount Uludağ, the Inkaya Plane Tree is one of Bursa’s most remarkable natural landmarks. Believed to be more than 600 years old, it offers visitors a memorable place to pause, appreciate nature and experience a living connection to the past.

Some trees offer more than shade. They give you a reason to slow down.

On the road climbing towards Mount Uludağ in Bursa, an enormous plane tree spreads its branches across the sky. As you approach, the trunk catches your attention first. Then you look up. One of its massive limbs seems almost like a tree of its own, stretching outward beneath a canopy that makes the people standing below look surprisingly small.

This is the Inkaya Plane Tree, one of Bursa’s best-known monumental trees.

Time Written Into the Trunk

The tree is believed to be more than 600 years old. The number helps you understand its age, but it cannot quite prepare you for standing beside it.

Its trunk, measuring around three metres in diameter, and its enormous spreading branches give the tree a presence that is difficult to capture in a photograph. Look closely at the folds of its bark, the grooves running through the trunk and the thick limbs supporting the canopy. You are looking at a living organism that has continued to grow through centuries of change.

It is tempting to imagine every historical event that might have taken place while this tree was growing. But there is no need to turn those possibilities into facts. The tree is remarkable enough without an invented legend. Its age, size and continued presence tell their own story.

A Pause on the Road to Uludağ

The Inkaya Plane Tree stands in Inkaya neighbourhood, along the route towards Mount Uludağ. If you are exploring Bursa, it makes a memorable stop before continuing towards the mountain.

At first, you may find yourself trying to fit the entire tree into a photograph. Step back, and its scale becomes clearer. Watch how the branches divide the sunlight and how the broad canopy changes the feeling of the space beneath it.

Then put your phone away for a moment.

Walk around the tree and take your time looking at it from different angles. Notice how small people appear beside the trunk. Listen to the leaves when the wind moves through them. The experience does not need a long itinerary or a complicated explanation.

Sometimes, the best way to remember a place is to spend a little longer in it.

What to Know Before You Visit

The Inkaya Plane Tree can attract considerable crowds, particularly on weekends and during pleasant weather. If you would prefer a quieter visit and more time for photographs, consider arriving earlier in the day.

There are businesses around the area where visitors may be able to stop for refreshments, although opening hours and available services can vary. Treat the tree as the main reason for your visit rather than simply a backdrop for a meal or a quick photograph.

Please do not climb the tree or put weight on its branches. Avoid disturbing the soil around its roots, too. Protecting a living monument is part of experiencing it responsibly.

More Than a Tree

When you visit the Inkaya Plane Tree, you encounter more than an impressive natural landmark. You meet a living witness to the passage of time in a city that continues to change around it.

Visitors arrive, take photographs and move on. Seasons pass. Sometimes the mountain air stirs the branches; sometimes the leaves barely move. The tree remains, offering its shade to the next person who stops beneath it.

When you leave Bursa, remember not only the size of the tree, but the moment when time seemed to move a little more slowly beneath its branches.
