How Much Mobile Data Do You Need in Turkey? A Tourist's Guide to Yesim eSIM
If you're visiting Türkiye, one of the easiest things to get wrong is buying either too little or far more mobile data than you actually need.
Most tourists use their phones for Google Maps, WhatsApp, translation, restaurant searches, online tickets, social media and occasional photos. You usually don't need a huge data package for that.
Here is a practical guide to choosing the right amount of data for your trip.
1. How much mobile data do I need for Turkey?
It depends on how you use your phone.
For a typical tourist, a useful starting point is:
- Light use: around 500 MB–1 GB
- Normal travel use: around 2–5 GB
- Heavy use: around 5–10 GB or more
- Streaming, hotspot or remote work: 10 GB+ or an unlimited plan
Maps, WhatsApp messages and normal web browsing generally use much less data than video streaming.
Yesim's own data guide gives similar ranges, with light users around 500 MB–2 GB, medium users around 2–5 GB and heavier users around 5–10 GB or more.
If you're mostly sightseeing and using hotel Wi-Fi at night, you probably don't need an enormous plan.
2. How much data is enough for a 7-day trip to Turkey?
For a one-week trip, 5 GB is a reasonable starting point for many tourists.
It should be enough for things like:
- Google Maps and navigation
- WhatsApp messages and calls
- Translation apps
- Checking restaurants and attractions
- Booking taxis or tickets
- Social media
- Occasional photo uploads
If you watch a lot of videos, make frequent video calls or use your phone as a hotspot, you may want 10 GB or more.
If you mainly use Wi-Fi at your hotel and only need mobile data while you're outside, you could use considerably less.
The important thing is that there isn't one correct number for everyone. Your video and hotspot usage can consume data much faster than maps and messaging.
3. Is unlimited eSIM data available in Turkey?
Yes. Yesim currently offers both fixed-data and unlimited-data plans for Türkiye. Its Turkey page lists options ranging from small data packages to unlimited data, with plan durations depending on the package selected.
However, “unlimited” doesn't necessarily mean unlimited maximum-speed data all day under every circumstance.
Yesim states that its partner network providers may apply their own Fair Usage Policy (FUP), and data speeds can be reduced when those conditions apply.
So if you're a normal tourist using Maps, WhatsApp and social media, a fixed 5 GB or 10 GB plan may be enough. Unlimited can make more sense if you expect heavy daily usage, streaming or other data-intensive activities.
4. How does Yesim work in Turkey?
Yesim is a data-only travel eSIM. You purchase a Turkey data plan, receive the eSIM/QR code, install it on a compatible phone and activate it when you're ready to use it.
The current Turkey plans can be installed before your trip, and Yesim recommends doing this before arriving because access to the Yesim website and app may be limited inside Türkiye due to local regulations.
The plan becomes valid when it connects to a compatible network, according to the current Turkey plan information.
One important detail: Yesim does not provide a normal Turkish mobile number with these data plans. They are designed for mobile internet. You can still keep your normal SIM and continue using your existing WhatsApp number.
5. Which mobile network does Yesim use in Turkey?
This is where it's better not to assume that Yesim means one specific Turkish operator.
Yesim's current Turkey information does not publicly identify one single Turkish mobile network as the operator for every plan. Instead, Yesim says it works with partner eSIM operators in Türkiye and uses its SwitchLess Networks technology to switch to the strongest available signal. Actual network availability can therefore depend on the plan, location and local network conditions.
Yesim lists coverage in Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir, Bursa, Gaziantep, Konya, Mersin, Şanlıurfa and other locations across Türkiye, with speeds of 3G, 4G, LTE or 5G depending on the provider and location.
So rather than promising a particular carrier, it's more accurate to say that Yesim connects through its partner networks in Türkiye, with the available network and speed depending on location and the plan.
6. Is Yesim Turkey eSIM suitable for tourists?
For a tourist who mainly needs mobile internet rather than a Turkish phone number, Yesim's Turkey eSIM is a practical option.
It can be useful if you want to:
- Have internet when you land
- Use Google Maps around Istanbul or other Turkish cities
- Message people on WhatsApp
- Use translation and travel apps
- Avoid changing your physical SIM card
- Keep your normal phone number
- Choose a fixed-data or unlimited plan
There are also some things to remember.
Your phone must support eSIM, the Yesim Turkey plans are data-only, and Yesim recommends buying and installing the eSIM before arriving in Türkiye.
So, how much data should you actually buy?
For a normal 7-day Turkey holiday, I'd start by looking at 5 GB if you use your phone normally.
Choose 10 GB or more if you regularly watch videos, upload lots of photos or use mobile data heavily.
If you know you'll be streaming a lot or using your phone as a hotspot, an unlimited plan may be more convenient, while keeping the possible Fair Usage Policy in mind.
And if your trip is mainly Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya or other tourist destinations, remember that your hotel and cafés may also provide Wi-Fi, which can significantly reduce how much mobile data you actually use.
