How Did My $200 Withdrawal Turn Into Almost $260? Avoiding ATM Fees and DCC Traps in Turkey
If you're traveling to Turkey, there's one ATM mistake that can cost you a surprising amount of money: accepting the ATM's currency conversion.
A traveler recently shared on Reddit that withdrawing around $200 in Turkey ended up costing almost $260 after exchange-rate markups and fees. Experiences vary by bank, card and ATM, but the problem is real enough that it's worth knowing how the system works.
The biggest trap: DCC
When you use a foreign card at a Turkish ATM, you may be asked whether you want the transaction charged in your home currency, such as USD, EUR or GBP.
This is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC).
It may look convenient because the ATM immediately shows you the amount in your own currency. The problem is that the ATM operator sets the exchange rate, and it can include a significant markup.
Visa itself advises travelers to decline DCC and choose the local currency when given the option.
So if you withdraw Turkish lira, look for options such as:
“Decline Conversion” “Without Conversion” “Continue without conversion”
Choose the option that leaves the transaction in TRY.
Which ATMs should you use?
There isn't one Turkish ATM that is guaranteed to be fee-free for every foreign card. Your own bank or card provider can also charge a withdrawal or foreign-exchange fee.
However, recent traveler discussions commonly mention Ziraat Bankası, Halkbank, VakıfBank and PTT as alternatives worth checking. Some users report successful low- or no-fee withdrawals, but fees can change and may depend on the card being used.
Be more cautious with independent ATMs, especially in heavily touristy areas. Always read the final fee and exchange-rate screen before confirming.
My simple Turkey ATM checklist
- Use a bank ATM rather than an independent tourist ATM.
- Withdraw TRY, not USD/EUR/GBP.
- Decline DCC when offered.
- Check the ATM's fee before confirming.
- Check your own bank's foreign ATM and FX fees too.
- If the fee looks ridiculous, cancel the transaction and try another ATM.
A few seconds reading the screen can save you a surprisingly large amount of money during your Turkey trip.
