Handüzü Plateau: A Mountain Escape Within Easy Reach of Rize

WhatsApp

Situated at an altitude of 1,800 meters near Güneysu district, Handüzü Plateau offers the perfect daily getaway in Rize with its easy asphalt access and magnificent misty mountain landscapes

The first thing you notice when you open the car door is the cool air. Beyond the streets you have left behind, green slopes stretch ahead. Wind moves through the grass; when mist arrives, the surrounding hills appear and disappear behind it. You may step out for a short walk at Handüzü and find yourself reluctant to get back in.

Handüzü Plateau, in Rize’s Güneysu district, is a lovely option if you want a highland experience without setting aside time for a long mountain journey. Its proximity to the district centre makes a day trip possible. Once you arrive, though, the landscape feels comfortably removed from everyday bustle.

A Landscape Worth Lingering Over

Part of Handüzü’s appeal is the way your eyes can wander across its open slopes. Meadows, surrounding hills and the highland settlement share the view. Clear weather reveals the distant landscape; drifting mist draws your attention back to what is close by.

Plants among the grass, flowers beside the road, stems bending in the breeze—walking slowly gives these smaller details a chance to catch your eye. After rain, the scent of damp earth and the cool air can become as memorable as the scenery.

For photographers, the changing weather adds interest. Clouds cast moving shadows across the slopes, altering the colours of the same hillside. There is no fixed hour for mist or a clear horizon; the weather shapes the view you find.

A Living Highland Settlement

Handüzü is an accessible plateau with homes and tourism facilities. Expect a place where nature and everyday life meet.

Highland life becomes more visible in summer. Seasonal festivities are also part of Handüzü’s history. If you hope to attend an event, check the programme for your travel dates.

While exploring around the houses, respect private spaces. Meadows, gardens and doorsteps are places people live in and care for. Keeping that in mind makes a visit more meaningful.

What Can You Do at Handüzü?

You do not need a packed itinerary. Walking through the plateau, pausing to enjoy the views and spending time outdoors can make a satisfying day.

If you enjoy walking, choose a distance that suits your pace. A short wander around the settlement, returning along a familiar route, is a pleasant way to get to know the area. Longer mountain walks require route knowledge and suitable preparation.

Stopping with a warm drink can reveal things you missed while moving: a cloud slipping behind a hillside, mist gathering around the rooftops, the change in sound when the wind drops. Sometimes that pause becomes the best part of the visit.

What Should You Bring?

Pack a warm layer and a waterproof jacket, even in summer. Conditions on the coast will not tell you exactly how the plateau will feel. Wind and fog can make it uncomfortable to stay outside in light clothing.

Comfortable shoes with good grip will help, too. Grass and paths can become slippery after rain. Bring drinking water for a day trip, and contact your chosen business beforehand if you plan to eat or stay overnight.

Where Is Handüzü Plateau, and How Do You Get There?

Handüzü Plateau lies in Rize’s Güneysu district at around 1,800 metres above sea level. It is 16 kilometres from Güneysu town centre and can be reached by vehicle. Its convenient location makes it a practical choice for adding a highland outing to a Rize itinerary.

From Rize city centre, head towards Güneysu and continue along the Handüzü route. The distance from Rize is given as approximately 34 kilometres, depending on your starting point and chosen route. Allow around 45 minutes for the drive from Güneysu to the plateau, with weather, traffic and road conditions affecting the journey.

A surfaced access road is one of Handüzü’s advantages. However, do not assume every section is asphalt or that driving conditions remain the same throughout the year. Before setting off, check local conditions, particularly during rain, fog or snow.

You might come to Handüzü for the view. On the way back, the memory of that cool mountain air may stay with you just as clearly.
