You don’t always need a plane ticket to look down on the clouds. In the mountains of Rize, when the weather falls into place, a white blanket settles below the green slopes. Houses, forests and the curves of the valley disappear beneath it. You stand on the grass while the clouds drift below. This is the view that makes people seek out Gito Plateau.
Located in Rize’s Çamlıhemşin district, Gito Plateau, also known as Kito, is worth visiting for its sweeping views over the forests. Once you arrive, your eyes rarely settle in one place for long. They move from a nearby highland house to the opposite hillside, then towards mountain ridges emerging through the mist.
A Highland Clearing Beyond the Forest
The experience begins before you reach Gito. The forest road climbing from the Fırtına Valley is an important part of the journey. After travelling between the trees, arriving on the open slopes makes the landscape feel even more expansive.
Grassy hillsides, houses and woodland stretching down into the valley share the scene. From this elevated position, layers of the landscape become visible that are difficult to appreciate from below. The nearest greens appear distinct, while distant ridges soften and recede behind one another as the atmosphere changes.
There is a good reason to linger. The view you find on arrival may look quite different a little later. A hillside hidden by rising mist can reappear as the wind moves the clouds along.
Gito’s Famous Sea of Clouds
The most striking photographs of Gito often show valleys filled with cloud. A low blanket of white covers the hollows between the mountains, leaving the higher ground visible above it. With the lower slopes hidden, the grass beneath your feet seems suspended even higher in the landscape.
But a sea of clouds is a weather phenomenon, rather than a view waiting on a fixed schedule. The valley may be completely clear when you visit, or the mist may rise high enough to envelop the plateau itself.
Clear weather reveals forests and mountain ridges in greater detail. When fog arrives, your world draws closer: the grass beside you, a house, the next bend in the track. Much of Gito’s appeal lies in watching those changes unfold while you remain in the same spot.
Highland Houses and a Living Landscape
Gito’s houses give the scenery a human scale. A mountain rises behind a roof. A green slope falls away from a doorstep. A track disappears at the edge of the forest. Details that catch your eye in photographs begin to connect as you walk through the plateau.
There are tourism businesses and newer buildings here, too. Gito is a place people visit, stay in and continue to use in everyday life.
As you explore, respect the private spaces around homes. Doorsteps and meadows belong to a lived landscape, and that everyday presence is part of what gives the plateau its character.
Walk a Little, Then Sit and Watch
You can enjoy Gito without planning a long hike. Wandering through the settlement, looking out from the open slopes and finding somewhere to sit can easily fill your visit.
Remember to look closer, too. Small plants among the grass, damp earth and the texture of timber all belong to the experience. When the wind picks up, the chill against your face adds something no photograph can convey.
A warm glass of tea suits the setting beautifully. If the mist begins to lift while you are sitting down, revealing a forest that had disappeared moments earlier, you may find yourself reluctant to leave the table.
Before Visiting Gito Plateau
Allow for the mountain road when planning your journey. The climb beyond Çamlıhemşin needs more care and time than an ordinary drive around town. Ask locally about current road conditions. In rain or thick fog, travelling with a driver who knows the route can make the journey easier.
Bring a warm layer and a waterproof jacket, even in summer. Choose comfortable footwear with a good grip for grassy ground and paths. Dressing only for the warmth of the coast can leave you too cold to stay and enjoy the view.
If you plan to spend the night, contact your accommodation beforehand to confirm access, room arrangements and meal service. For a day trip, leave enough time to complete the return journey in daylight.
Give Gito more than the time it takes to take a photograph. After that first picture, lower your phone and stay a little longer. The mist may part; the opposite hillside may disappear. What keeps you watching is the feeling that the landscape is still changing.
